The other day I was at a fish store and just looking at fish. I overheard a conversation the manager was having with another customer. She was wondering if she could have an oscar in a 30 gallon. Well the manager said three will fit in a 30 gallon. Can you believe that? I just could not believe my ears. It just irritates me when a place will just say what ever to sell. I was fuming and stormed out. It just makes me really sad that those poor Oscars will be crammed into a tiny tank like that.

One oscar needs a 75 gallon tank, can you just imagine what that tank is going to look like. I said something to the guy there shook my head and walked out. He new he was wrong, obviously.

Unfortunately it happens, especially at big chain shops. Best thing to do would be to 'vote with your feet' as it were and try and inform others about fishe's true needs. One of worst I have seen was when I was at a big chain shop, with their 'Maximum' sizes of fish, was totally ridiculous.

It's to bad it had to be old news. There is only one place around here that is really bad which I have to say is good. Most other plecaed are well kept. But this one place was truly disgusting.

as has been said, whilst iritating, this sort of thing does happen all the time whether u like it or not. best thing you can do is vote with your feet and not shop there again. if everyone did the same the bad shop would soon go out of business

It's funny, I remember when I used to get worked up over stuff like this. It is old, old news for me... Heard it many times before...
Yep

My favorite was several years ago a LFS was pushing Christmas Fish. Glass Barb's they had injected with Red and Green dye with a hypodermic needle. :good:

Now that's pathetic! That is not necessary, unfortunately I bet a lot of people bought them.

They went through most of a 300 gallon tank that had been filled with inch long fish. Several months after Xmas I was in the store and saw a 29 gallon tank in the corner with a sign "Ornamental Barbs 4 for $3" with about 12 fish bobbing in it. This was the same store that had tattooed fish. They looked like Albino Red Devils or Midas. 4-5" long with bright red chinese(?) symbols tattooed in vertical lines down their flanks. Good Luck Albino's $4.99.
The Grange Co-Op store in a local small town has a small section devoted to tropical fish. They aren't my regular LFS stop, but they get interesting fish some times. They carry fish that you will never find in any of the chains. And you see crazy stuff like the above.
(A Grange is large store devoted to farms, they sell cattle feed and such by the ton. their fish seem an afterthought)

The worst are those Parrot fish that have had the tail cut off them so they look like hearts. But, I bet some fish would prefer that then be kept by some of the pet owners I have talked to...

Now that really does make me sad. I have a little baby parrot named Doodles and she is my favorite fishe. I can't imagine cutting off her tail. I know a lot of people don't agree with parrot fish and that is fine everyone has a right to their own opinion but don't abuse them. That's just wrong.

So sad were i live there is a pet shop called living jungle there is about 3 of the shops they house there oscars in a 15 liter tank with about 10 oscars in it and the thing that i hate the most is when pet shops keep bigger fish in smaller tank its not fair
