I've had oscars before, I have a question, when i put oscars with other cichlids at about the same size, why do they always up dying? or why are they always the ones that get punked to death?

lets say if i had a 55 gallon cichlid tank set up, ones with caves and all. if i was to put 5 cichlids in the tank. a midas, firemouth, jewel, convict, and oscar all the same size of 2.5 inches, why does the oscar always end up getting beat up and usually killed?

Maybe it's because you have too many fish in too small a tank. Oscars are the least aggressive, so they're the ones that lose out.

people im NOT talking about when oscars 12inchs. im talking about when they are 2.5inches with other cichlid fish the same in size. why do oscars aways end up being the first fish to get beat up or die?

REMEMBER, im not talking about when oscars are 12 inches.

Because pound for pound Oscars are wimpy cichlids.

Cichlids are territorial and aggressive. They don't have to be full size to get pissed off about being crowded in a tank with other cichlids.

Oscars are not as aggressive as the other cichlids. They are actually probably one of the least aggressive big cichlids you can get. They are pretty wimpy compared to most other cichlids.

Oscars are slow and just not built in the same way as your other Cichlids. They dont have the speed or jaw structure to fight off or withstand attacks from the fish you have them in with at that size.

They only survive when they are larger because of how big they get. At that size, when the aggression is just starting to come out in some of those fish, especially the Midas, the Oscar doesn't stand a chance.

Not to mention, your tank is too small.

Aren't you the guy that ran a thread on hating oscars? If this is the case which i suspect it is then why are you bothered, you shouldn't be keeping oscars anyway. Plus if you have such a mind-set as to hate a particular type of fish for no particular reason then perhaps you shouldn't be keeping them at all. :sly:

Hi,
With cichlids it is suggested that you buy them in large groups and if possible all at the same size.
Hopefully this makes them less terriotrial then if the fish were added one by one after a long period of time, this sometimes stops them fighting all the time. Then your oscars and other cichlids dont die alot (hopefully).

Sorry it really hard to explain for me ! :/
