Hubby want's me to get an oscor, but i know nothing a about them. where in this forum can i found out more? which category of fish arethey. arethey peaceful??

thanks

New world cichlids. They will eat anything that fits into their mouth, and they have big mouths. Not as aggressive as many other cichlids, but not peaceful by any means.

New World Cichlids, require a large tank, grow to be around 12 inches (1 foot) and depends on what you mean by peaceful. if kept with other large aggressive fish they could be considered peaceful by comparison. However, they are preditory and will eat other fish.

Or he can go out & buy a 75 gallon tank. :) That's what I would do. Then my wife would kill me.

oscars require at least a 55 gallon tank, but preferably a 75 gallon. If you choose to get a 55 gallon, then no other fish can be put in with it. They eat anything that can fit in there mouth, but they are prolly the smartest fish out, as they recognize you, and sometimes you can teach them tricks. Sometimes they grow to about 15 inchs, but they are a fish that I would consider a real "pet".

I have oscars... Yes you need a big tank to keep one or more happy... Don't bother with real or even fake plants as they will tear them apart.... Rocks or driftwood are the things that oscars will tolorate..... They liked their water temperature at 75-78F..... And the pH should be around 6.0-6.5..... Oscars are smart and very strong fish.... They can pull a net from your hands once they are big enough.... Remember they get 14 inches long some times.... So be warned!!!
