I have a pair of Oscars. Last night I noticed that they had laid eggs (hundreds of them) over a piece of bogwood. When I looked in this morning it seems that the female, I guess its the female as it slightly smaller, has been eating them to which there may only be 50 or so left. This is the first time that they have mated but I thought that they would have protected the eggs, and young when arrived, for a period of time. Anybody think of a reason why they would eat the eggs?

Possibly there were not fertilised or something was wrong with them.

What colour are the eggs?

As minx said also this is there first time iam guessing there unsure how to care for egg's which is very usual for cichlids in there first batch, maybe second time round, failing that they could both be female, 2 females will do everything down to laying the eggs, but obviously nothing will happen, see what happen's this time, do they fan the egg's with there fin's? also they will eat/remove the mouldy ones leaving only the good

The eggs were white/yellowish in colour. They had just laid them as I done a water change the day before.

My first thoughts were they might not have been fertilised although the bigger Oscar, the male I think, did have an oilly reddish liquid come out of it over the eggs. They were fanning them last night and looked as if they were guarding them too.

Hopefully better luck next time.

from the sound's of it you may have a pair then, 1st batch usually get's eaten so don't worry, that is a usual trigger a large waterchange, hopefully very soon they will try again
