hey guys, i just wanted to ask could i feed my oscars on spam or luncheon meat ?

spam, reported!

just kidding :) no idea. Doesn't sound wise though,

hahaha
ill just keep them on there blood worms and praws for now :)

It will foul the water, if you are going to try it, do a water change straight after, i used to feed mine cat food (spam aint much better than that lol). (on top of pellets etc)

would i still need to do the water change if i fed them on cat meat to ?

yes big time, anything meaty that has oils in and seperates easy, like tuna also, anything thats meaty and comes from cans need a quick water change and gravel vac afterwards.

Another thing fish love is boiled egg yolk, its equally messy to....so needs the same treatment.

I would have thought there'd be far too much fat and salt in both Spam and luncheon meat to make them a suitable food for oscars. Cat and dog food would be better, because there'd be less salt, but they're still not a good diet for fish. You could try a chunk once a week or so, and yes, you'd probably need to do a bit of a water change and clear up afterwards.

Chunks of whitefish, like cod or pollack, would be far more suitable; just make sure it's a marine fish so there's no risk of introducing diseases or parasites.

I feel like I'm missing something here.

What is your reason to try spam, cat/dog food or similar when good, proven fish food is easily available? I'm not sure what the benefit is.

Nothing wrong with experimenting with treats mate.

Custard Creams are bad for my dog, but he still loves them, Kebabs and cider are bad for me, but again i love it.

oh because they are meat eatter and plus i wanted to give them a treat once a week or something :good:

I agree with the 'treat' concept for fish food, but I'd advocate treats a fish could expect to find in the wild.....bloodworms for example. Something that their digestive system is known to cope with. Bits of mashed up cow or pig don't fit that description for me.

I know that beef heart is sold as fish food, but even that is now being debated due to the different fats it contains.

Cider and kebabs? No thanks, my body is a temple........lager and burgers only!

Maybe the same reason why people feed their cats and dogs people food
