one of the rescued oscars (the worst off one) seems to have developed a red sore spot behind its left fin (the ones used for pushing it through the water) and has also develope a rather strange swimming style.

its as if he cant turn around, when he gets to where he wants to turn, he flips around and swims upside down then straightens up when he's fully turned. any ideas??

the tank is currently being treated with a medication for hole in the head disease, and its only since i started the medication that this fish is having problems. could it be that?

Red sores can be caused by parasites to bacterial.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Does the sore look like its eating the skin away.

Internal parasites can make them swim on there sides.
What do you feed your fish?
Once fish start to swim up side down the outcome not always great.
Is he bloated.

he's not constantly swimming upside, just when he tries to turn around. the sore is on the 'ball' shaped bit of the socket of the fin (if you know what i mean) it looks a blood blister under the skin.

he is not bloated. they are fed on cichlid food, pellets and various meaty frozen foods (not all at once!!!!! varies from day to day with one day where they dont get fed pr week)

How long have you got to go with treating hole in the head.
Can you issolate him as he needs to be treated with a bacterial med.

im on day three of a course of treatment.i apparantly have to use the whole bottle so am thinking theres a few days left to go!! both of the oscars are being treated although only one shows signs of hith (not the one with swim troubles and sore)

i really have no where to isolate him too, my hospital tank is possibly too small for such a big fish. could i not treat the whole tank with a bacterial med

What its say in the instructions about using other meds with the hole in the head treatment.

erm good question, will have to get my other half to translate it when he gets home (its in flemish, no english) will let you know in the morning :)

thanks shelagh, i hope so too :( thinking of moving my fry to the tank i got for a baby turtle, then moving statler into the old fry tank and treating him, he's not looking too happy at the moment :( getting a bit worried, he's not himself

Parasties can bacterial infections.
I would prepare yourself so the worst, so sorry.

sorry for not updating sooner, been terribly busy. he seems back to normal, that red patch from his fin is not there anymore? could it have been a blister or something thats popped? theres no mark. could it have been a reaction to the HITH treatment??
also the sideways/upsode swimming hasnt occured for the past 24 hours. it all seems to have stopped since i stopped the HITH treatment?

also will the holes in the other fishes head actually heal, or was the medication just to stop them getting worse??

The hole in the head treament will kill the parasites.
I think the holes could start to heal.
Never had hole in the head so don't know much about it.
The fish has a good immune system can fight desease off.
I doubt the med caused it.
Tolak knows alot about hole in the head maybe pm him.
