I added a 6" baby silver arowana yesterday to my juwel rio 180 (temporary tank) and my oscar (6") started attacking him. Then after 24 hours the oscar had cooled down and they where getting on fine, i came home from shopping to find a battered arowna with no tail and cuts all over his belly. I moved the arowana to a 54L along with his friend (the 4" silver shark) while i thought of a plan :( Will its tail grow back as it was bit off right by its body cutting its body a bit? Please dont have ago for the tank size it was either that or let him die so i picked the first choice. It is only temporary and i will get some melafix for him tomorrow.
Will his tail grow back do you think? I added the silver shark to the 54L tank so the arowana wasnt on his own as they get along really well and swim around together.

Yeah, as you can see adding a fish to a tank with a territorial fish in residence is not a good move and will predictably end badly.

I would medicate with an anti bacterial. Maybe add some Stress Coat. Turn the lights off for a few days. Keep the water extremely clean.

Others may have some better ideas for the medication in the UK. But I would go up a notch on the medication strength.

thanks mate. Well funny you should say keep the lighting off for a few days as it broke thats why the tank had no fish in it X( Thanks again, i will add some stress coat if not then i will just get some melafix.

Just like to add you say your rio 180 is a temporary tank, but your 6 inch oscar will need a new tank right away, and adding on top or that an arrowana?I don't really see the point.Unless you are getting a new tank very soon  Which you probably are going to lol.

The oscar is fine where he is he is showing no signs of stressd and looks very happy.
The arowna didnt make it unfortunately as i found him dead this morning :(

Sorry.

I think cheezy feet wants you to know that Oscars need a minimum of 75 usg for good health. I have seen one in a 50 usg and it could barely turn around. They require room and they are a dirty fish.
