Hi all,

I have a 90 gallon tank that is currently housing community tropical fish. (Molly's, platys and 4 tetras.) I was thinking of moving these fish to a 29 gallon tank that I have in order to get an an Oscar. I was wondering with a 90 gallon tank what tankmates can I have with the Oscar that will give the tank more life to it?

Welll if you have got very good filtration maybe another oscar(not sure) or somee dithers like silver dollars to keep him active.

Most 90g tanks are the same measurements as a 75g but taller, which doesn't do any good for most cichlids. A 90g won't be large enough for more than 1 Oscar and a few small fish. Like cheesy feet mentioned, maybe some SD's but that's about all. You can have smaller fish in there but they may get eaten in time but SD's are usually too quick for Oscars.

Sd's are great tankates for oscars as there quick and an award shape.

id get 5 Sd' 1 Oscar and maybe a Syno for the bottom.

The filter I have is a Fluval 405 it pumps 340 GPH and seems to be good although Im kinda a newbie so it could actually be a terrible filter and I just dont know it. The tank though seems huge 18" deep fairly tall. With this type of filter would another Oscar or even a Jack Dempsey be ok?

IMO, you have too little filtration as it is now. With the larger cichlids you want to turn your tank over a minimum of 10x an hour.

On my least-filtered tank I have an Emporer 400 and an Aquaclear 500 on a 75g tank and still do 2-4 wc's a week.

Remember, the Oscar you have now may be small but chances are he's going to be 10" in a year and if it's a male can grow to 16".

So what else would you recommend? Im new to this so all the help is mucho appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure where you're located and what filters are available if you're from somewhere other than the US but I would get another filter to get more filtration in there, at least double what you have now.

It is said that you should have 10x the filtration of the tank when you have a Oscar so a 90g would need 900gph(gph gallons pre hour).. You can do two Oscars in a 90g just add something in the middle of tank for terrotory issue. I would 2 Oscar or 1 and like 6 SD they will school enough to add life to the tank..
