Hi all, today I noticed that my Oscar has bumped the side of his face against something, and there were several scales missing below his eye.

His eye has now swollen up a bit.

Am wondering if this could be popeye, or just simply that his eye swelled up due to the injury.

He is in a 75 gal. and I did changed a third of the water in the tank tonight after finding out about his injury.

Poor thing - does it look like his eye is sticking out a bit or surrounded in a blistery sack?

It probably is popeye caused by the initial injury leading to further bacterial infection. I had that happen to a sailfin molly once and she got very bad popeye - but luckily I had medications to start treatment as soon as I noticed it and within a couple of days it had reduced dramatically.

Not sure if you are in the UK or elsewhere but over here you can buy things like MYXAZIN or PIMAFIX (I have used both so can recommend as I've seen good results), both are good anti-bacterial meds that won't harm your filter media.

Regards - Athena

Oscar's eye is less swollen today, and his injury is healing very very quickly.

I'll keep a close eye on him but it looks like he'll be in top shape in no time.

Good to hear the Oscar is healing up. Might want to buy a little bit of Melafix to add to the tank, it is a mild bacterial medication made out of tea tree oil and will aid in the process of healing. Also makes the tank smell quite nice!! :D
