This is Rusty when I first got him (sorry for the link to the pic but photobucket is playing up) http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/333657-its-rusty-the-newest-member-of-the-star-household/

Now he is almost completely black  the orange markings are very very thin and faint. I am feeding him loads of different foods (pellet, flake, graule, veg, prawns, bloodworm peas) and the black on him is BLACK! if he gets upset he does go more greeny grey, like when I do a water change, but the little white patches under his chin and on his belly are bigger! I know the patterns on oscars are different, but the rate these are dissapearing he is going to end up all black! :hyper: Me being me is starting to worry

have been reading up and he is like my other one i had not a true tiger so he marking will be pot luck and also the colours

Chillipepper's Oscar looks fabulous!! My oscars are the same as well but one them tends to use his mouth before changing his color.... But mine are still my best pets I've ever kept!!

Rusty's markings are thinner than on Boris, if he turns slightly on his side near the surface (watching in case the lid is being lifted  ) I can see the orange markings, but when swimming normally they are only just visible. He is still gorgous though

Perfectly normal, don't worry :)

This was Boris when I first got him (at a mere inch big!), as you can see he's lost a lot of his red/markings.

I think it's a big reason why Oscars are so popular, as juveniles their markings are very distinct, they lose this as they get older.

It's the opposite with most other cichlids, who grow to be 'better' looking as they get older.

They may be 'prettier' when younger, but their personality grows as they get bigger and that is what makes Oscars such fantastic fish, IMO.

Oscars are full of characteristics and every Oscar has it's own personality!! Some people even consider them as a family pet and it can be compared with with other family pets like dogs, cats and parrots!!

As a prior Oscar keeper, I completely understand the attraction.

But in all my lfs's they sell a ton of Oscars. I seriously doubt that there are same number of 100g tanks that there are Oscars to home.

Many fishkeepers as I have realised, dont do any research before they buy, they buy what they like the look off, doesnt matter what size the fish gets too.

A number of times I've seen ppl go crazy about juvenile oscars at the shop, and majority of ppl that used to see my adult Oscar was like 'thats one ugly fish'..lol...

Anyway, this is going off topic..so I'll stop there.

Oh Rusty was not an impulse buy, it took me 6 months+ to fully decide yes an oscar was going to be for me.
