Hello Peeps,

I had a reasonably large oscar given to me last night along with a couple of other cichlid type fish. The problem i have was when i checked my tank this morning to find a tail in the oscars mouth. He had only eaten one of the larger molly's :grr:. I am getting alittle worried now do you think my gourami's, silver dollars + Kribs will be ok with it or do you think he will eat them an all ?

I have since seperated all my guppys, neons etc. their in their own seperate tank. I have attached a couple of pics so maybe you could tell me the names of what type of cichlids they are. i dunno if there is a name for a certain type of oscar aswell but here is a pic similar of mine to.

Many thanks if you can help

Red Tiger Oscar and a Convict.

I wouldn't hold much hope for the other fish depending on the size of the Oscar..but sooner or later it will eat most, if not all of your other fish depending on the size and type they are.

The Silver Dollars MIGHT be ok, but the others, I doubt will last.

Convicts can also be rather aggressive, but I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, just the Oscar.

Also, what size tank are they in?

First of all, what's the size of the tank they're in right now? What other tanks do you have, if any, and how are they stocked?

That oscar is going to eat anything that can fit in his mouth, and they have surprisingly large mouths. Your kribs are not safe if he is fully grown, and the gouramis may be in danger as well depending on what kind they are. The other fish looks like a convict to me. If you are unfortunate enough to have a male and a female, they will breed like crazy and are mean little devils to boot.

Hi Chris, Nice Oscar. What size is he? Mine is 6" - Nose to tail.

Your Silver dollars will be fine if they are a fair size.
I have 4 Silver dollars in with my Oscar they are about 3".

I'd take out the Kribs, and Gourami's, just leave the Oscar, Convicts and the silver dollars in together.
but then saying that it really depends on what size tank you have. the Oscar needs 55 Gallons bare minmium alone.

Good luck with him/her. Nice Colour. :D

Hello the Gourami's that are in the tank are as follows:

2 x Golden Gourami
2 x Blue Gourami
2 x Kribs
2 x Corydoras
Large Pleccy

Its in a 4ft Tank Setup. I am having another 4 ft tank towards the end of the week gonna do another set up in there hopefully.

The Convicts he gave me have bred, there is the mother and father plus i think there is 4 children.

I've heard of people keeping the Golden Gourami and Blue Gourami's (assuming they are Opaline Gourami) as 'dither' fish in with larger cichlids, as they are fairly fast and get a good size.

The Plec should be ok aswell, but the Cory cats and Kribs won't stand much of a chance.

Also, be careful of the breeding Convicts, they are highly protective of their spawns and will attack ANYTHING they consider to be a threat that gets too close.

Hope that helps.

my brother was given a pair of 1 " sickly babie oscars, we cared for them and now they are about 3" and i was wondering if these fish are alright with the oscar as they grow....

1x green terror 4"
2x BP about 3.5"
1x emerald cichlid 6"
and a spotted gar 8" hes my equivelent to a dither fish and hes way kool to watch him swim about and feed.

as the oscars grow, already at a fast rate i was wondering if any of these fish would have to move into another tank. help would be apreciated:)
