What do people think of x1 Oscar (say about 6" when purchased) in a 48x22(high)x20(deep) tank. Thats about 300 litres, 66 UK GALL, 81 US GALL

Tank Mates, x2 Senegal Bichirs, currently about 4" and x2 Reed Fish, currently about 5"

Don't know anything about the tankmates you are keeping, but you will have to worry about the Oscar eating them. They'll eat anything they can fit in their mouth. LOL Also, there is the aggression level in the tank. If they are peaceful fish, the Oscar will have them running for cover. LOL

As for the tank size...that alone might cure the Oscar's territorialness. But, remember..they are territorial. :)

It may be able to be done, but it's gonna be kinda of tricky. If you get the Oscar bigger than bichir you may have a chance. If the bichir is bigger than the Oscar your oscar may become a nice snack. Not sure if your aware or not but senegals can reach up to a foot in length. I've never kept a reed fish, so I can't help you on that.

thanks for reply, yeh, Senegal can get to 12" i know, Reed Fish size even potentially bigger

I really am not sure about the Oscar, considering other options!

In my experience with bichirs, they have shown no interest in fighting/eating my cichlids.

I've kept bichirs anywhere from 4-6'' with cichlids anywhere from 3''-8''..

I don't know what a reed fish is, but with 2 senegals and an oscar, be sure to overfilter the tank!!

hello Vancouver

cheers, more concerned about the Cichlids behaviour toward the Bichir to be honest

i actually might end up with x4 Senegal Bichir in this tank, and Reed fish are potentially even bigger! I am looking to upgrade

As for filters, it's x2 Eheim 2028's, i always over filter and always use x2 externals atleast

At the moment, i am thinking an Oscar would not be a responsible move in this tank.

I used to have oscars with ornate birchirs, they were fine together, no aggression nothing. Though I would try and make the size difference as little as possible.

Reedfish do better with peaceful fish, so i would say either get birchirs and an oscar, or just birchirs, or reedfish and some peaceful fish (e.g. congo tetras, angelfish, gouramis)

i think i am NOT going to go down the cichlid route here, a safer bet is in order i think, although you have got me thinking about Angelfish

Hmm.. a pair of angelfish and a group of 5 reedfish... sounds great. I wish i had a big enough tank, haha! :good:
