Hey, i bought an oscar on Friday and he swims around the aquarium ok but only if he cant see me! lol.

is that normal? i kno my cichlids were shy at first but they seemed to come round pretty quick.

Hes only about 5" at the mo and hes in my 40G with a plec and fully grown (so bigger than him) RTBS.

im upgrading them all to a 6x2x2 in about 4 weeks before anyone says anything......

Did anyone have him before you? If they did maybe he was treated cruelly and maybe even at the lfs where you bought him. Kids etc; banging on the glass. Mine were ok but i bought them as babies. They were never afraid though and now in the 8-9" range and happy.

Good luck with settling him :good:

well he was in a tank with about 5 other oscars of various sizes and the tank was only 4ft so i cnt imagine it was a happy tank.

he seems a bit better this morning. came swimming out right infront of me anyway.

Excellent, glad to hear it. You'll have fun with him in the future

Once it understands that you change it's water, and feed it.. it should be more personable.. I've had mine for about 5 months and it's pretty close to eating from my hand in the water.

They're great fun once they get to know you. When mine were 5"-6" i had them jumping out of the water to take pellets from my hand. I don't bother with it now though cos the one i have left is verging on 8-9" and he makes a BIG splash!!

Oscars Rule!! :D

he will settle in time.the more they see of you the more attached they get.mine is 5-6inches long and has a great personality but its taken a good month to get his confidence.dont rush it ,it will be well worth it in the end
:D
