I have just met someone with a 12" ish oscar in a thirteen gallon tank, it has no filter at all just a heater the tank is only 3/4 full and gets a 10-15% water change every 2 weeks (weather it needs it or not  )
could you give me some feed back on this so i can try and show this person the error of thier ways!!

Wow, oscars need much more than thirteen gallons even when they are small.

1st- get a bigger tank they may be able to get by with a 30 gallon with only that oscar in it but thats even small for a fish that size. I would recomend somewhere around 50 gallon.

2nd- Oscars are extremely messy, they need plenty of filtration i always used two 60gallon filters in my old 50 gallon tank.

3rd- Read up on the fish you can find some good info on them here it will tell you more about the needs of this fish

I guess this would be another case of a lfs not really caring about the fish, but rather about the sale...

you know i was gonna say give them a smack

not funny really but that's completely awful.

what you should do is get a box just a little bit bigger than them, and shut them in it, don't give them a toilet or anything like that, just leave them to fester in they're own waste, clean it once every 2 weeks (weatehr it needs it or not)

that poor fish, i would recommend you get as many articles as you can on Oscars and print them off for this person and make them read them, if they don't sort it out and get a bigger tank then go and catch the fish, hand it in to a fish shop, or call the rspca. :/

poor Oscar, I'm amazed it's not dead

Thats awesome!! I wish I thought of that. :good: :good:

Just goes to show how hardy Oscar's really are - That fish must be so miserable though. I'm all for Miss Wiggle's idea but make the box a metal dustbin or similar instead and someone should regularly bang on it with a huge mallet. :p

haha. I love how people can be so creative when it comes to torture!! Kinda scary though too....

13 galls is 2 foot, so yes, technically, anyway, I suggest this:

at 1am, break in and knock them out, do what you want, lock them in a bin, then roll the bin down a hill.

steal the oscar and try and trade it in or give it away. After 2 days retrieve the person (s) and ask them if they liked their holiday to Jamaica. Fiercely claim that they did go to Jamaica and make sure they believe you.

there we go :D

People like him make me angry, oscars are like the the man's best friend of fish, great personality and a joy to own. Im suprised it hasnt developed hole in the head. makes me sad :-(

I second the idea of punching him

Surprised no-one recommended a visit from the good old RSPCA, surely they'd help find the O a new home, or at least give the owners a bit of a scare and point them towards a bigger tank or a new home?

I love the nice PC idea.... but i bet you it would be just like animal cops from animal planet on TV... The RSPCA would show up....the people would deny mistreating the fish and that they didn't even realize that their was a problem with how the fish was living and then would go to court and beg to keep the fish because their 5 year old son will nevr forgive them if they have to give it up.....

It's the same ol thing like when someone owns a horse and keeps them in a 10' by 20' pen and thinks the animal is "happy"......
