Platies don't care at all about the color of their mates. In wild type platies, something you will never see in a pet shop, they can actually have minor preferences for the natural colored partner but in LFS platies, you will never see that. The platies we have today come from so many crosses between platies and swords and other unrelated platies that the poor fish really don't know what they are or what a "natural wild type" platy looks like. All of the color and shape preferences research that I have seen were carried out using one or another pure wild type strain and even there the preferences measured would not have prevented breeding. They only showed a mild preference for fish of the right color and shape.
