Not long started my first planted aquarium and like most enthusiasts im already planning my next one....

Would really love to do a large (400+litre) open top tank but i cant seem to find one anywhere..it seems that all the tanks ive looked at come with hoods and to not use it seems like a waste of money...

Im guessing theres loads of people on here that have this style of tank so if you would be so kind as to tell me where to look then id be very grateful...

p.s. i mean something like this :

You can either look at custom made tanks, or that tank in the pic is an ADA tank, but unless you have an arm+leg to spare you probably won't get one of those ;)

Clearseal might be worth a look at, but you're probably wanting "braceless" so they might not be suitable.

Check out AquaEssentials. They do a range of opentop tanks too. What country are you in?

This type of tank is called a rimless, braceless tank. I.e the silicone is done much neater than other tanks and as you can see from that photo, there are no additional braces along the top of the tank (these are normally hidden by the hood on 'kit' type tanks). The other thing about this tank is that it is made from a high clarity glass called opti-white. Its very expensive but there is far less colour distortion when viewing the tank.

This type of glass is of course optional, you dont have to have it.

Right re shops, Aquaessentials do the 'best' tanks i.e. as described, opti-white, braceless and rimless. This would be about the 100g mark

But as you can see it aint cheap, but it is the best of the best.

You could get a standard float-glass tank (95% of aquariums are float glass, its the same as they use in windows on houses, etc). Again this one would be around 100g

Much cheaper. Then you could get one built. Ive not used any of these of these so cant comment, but supposedly all good.

The last one you can have the front glass panel as opti-white if you want to :)

Hope that helps

Sam

PS - I love open top tanks, but dont forget fish like to jump and an open top 100g tank will lose a lot of water via evaporation, which can cause damp in some houses. Just so you know.

Edit - Ninaj'd by Steve :ninja: - serves me right for writing to much! waffle waffle

cheers for the advice guys.....the links are great..
