hey i just bought a JD at 1" and hoping it can go in my 4x2x2 when its bigger

do you think it will be too aggressive for my firemouths, rainbow cichlids and heckliis?

i read up on it before and read that it can work in community tanks, but after more reading now im unsure.

thanks, joel.

jack dempseys shoyuuld be fine in there - they are after all a chichlid.

From my personal experience Jacks are no where near as aggressive as the articles make out to believe. They were perhaps the most notorious cichlid available years ago, but now a day theres are far more aggressive purchases out there.

I've found Jacks to be occasionally boistrous if anything. I've had several now over the last few years and only had one female who was a little OTT on the beligerent side, the others have all been shy and reserved fish. I've kept mine with all sorts from Japonica shrimp (on the rare occasion) all the way through to Tetras of various sorts including rummy-nose to Buenos aires tetras. They are definately timid fish, and i kept a breeding pair in a general community tank with Geophagus Brasiliensis, Rotkeil Severums, a Firemouth and others, not at the same time ofcourse though. In all these tanks the Jacks were absolutely fine with their companions.

thanks for the info verminator, i was starting to get worried about even keeping him with guppies in the grow out tank, he's currently with juvi firemouths, juvi angel, guppies and tetras, although i will send him to the big tank at 2-3" hopefully before he gets a chance to eat anything :p

never kept a jack before so hopefully it works out well

With other cichlids it will be fine, at least till maturity, but guppies and tetras will vanish kept with most cichlids, sooner or later.

IME, JD's aren't aggressive. They will hold their own, but not start a fight. I have kept my female in with a wide variety of CA and SA cichlids and they only ones she didn't like were a Nic (cowbag to everyone), FM (again, a #118####) and my Rotkeils (but that's because the male picks at her, and she retaliates).

I think they are a good allrounder really, for a cichlid community. Not sure about putting her in with normal community fish, but other cichlids, definitely.
