One Of My New Girls Is Dead :-(

So sorry!

Have you tested the water? I would usually do a good water change or two at the first sign of trouble, just in case. Something may have gotten in the water--a spray or something. I just had one of my new sorority girls die. I have no idea why. I did a major waterchange, added some salt and today some IAL. The others are doing fine now, and the tank looks good.

Betta do well with a small amount of salt, and Indian Almond Leaf is a highly recommended additive for Betta and other black water fish.

All you can do now is keep it clean and watch. Also fast the girls a day or so and then give them a bit of smushed blanched pea or daphnia.

Thanks jollysue

I do 100% changes every 2 days as they are in a temporary home until their real home is cycled. I add betta spa which is an almond leaf extract and its got salts in as well. I will fast them and give them some more peas, they quite liked them when I gave them some the other day.

Ive also lost a dwarf gourami today as well :( :rip:

i think having a little bit of salt, chlor out (obviously), and adding quickcure or ick away every week or so sometimes helps. well, only use ick away or quick cure ifsomethings wrong. but melafix may be good to keep them healthy if something was wrong.

forgot to say ive been adding melafix as well as they had a little fin damage from transport

The medication won't do anything for the fins if its not fin rot from what I understand. I would use stress coat with aloe vera extract, it's supposed to help with damaged scales and fins.

Yes, MelaFix is recommended to help repair damaged fins. BettaSpa is also good. :D

Be sure to check/reduce the dose of the MelaFix for Bettas. Some recommend Aquari-Sol, a very mild anti parisitical (ich) medication, as an ich preventative when fish are stressed. Aquarium Products has three levels of ich remedy. Aquari-Sol is the mildest. I use it whenever I am concerned that the fish are in danger of an ich outbreak. It is good when other meds are being used as it is not prone to overdose.
