Omg!

Depends, do you mind if fish watch while your having sex with your partner?

I dont know about closing ANY section off, i have a bit of OCD so its all or nothing, plus ide be pissed if this wicked sweet fish was trolling around my aquadorm and im following it with my bottle of wine, then it goes to the one section of the house i had blacked out...

there should be enough algae eating fish around to keep our homes clean, but over time, if were too close to the reef the reef could expand to our home and totally make it impossible to see anything.

On the bright side, no need for ph tests water changes protine skimmers masker kits...

And BEST of all...

NO STOCKING LIMIT!

Ocean > all

The old 'jelly bean' parrot story is a well known one by now :) unfortunatly theres still demand for them so itll keep going on, lets just do out best to avoid the trade and encourage others to do the same.

could we not, collectively, boycott any stores that continue to sell them? i know that would be an issue in some areas where there are very few (or only one) place to buy fish, but the bigger chains at least might start to take note - surely between us all we make up a reasonable portion of their profits?

how about somewhere for breeders on here to sell their fish directly to other members? personally I'd rather buy from someone on here where I know the fish have been looked after properly, rather than buying from a chain who are encouraged to keep prices as low as possible - of course, then it comes down to price, as it'd be more expensive to buy and transport individual fish than truckloads at a time!

Boycotting only makes you look like an extremist prick, yes boycotting in theory is a good idea, but it has to be done SILENTLY, the problem with boycotters today is they make their agenda public and they stand around with signs and make a big show of it, this allows the people your boycotting to down size your argument by calling you an extremist or a "loon". boycotts very rarely if ever succeed.

and in the end you just lose time money and respect, theres other ways to go about doing things, we just need to act in a controlled respectable manner.

well, as a silent boycott, how does an ebay for fish sound? well, more an amazon for fish lol - i'd be more than happy to look at getting something setup if there'd be enough interest! the main problem being, do enough members breed enough to sell to other members?! in theory, with enough breeders dotted around the world, the distance fish are transported might reduce

p.s., i'm sure I qualify as a loon, and don't mind too much if people would like to call me that :D

i wasnt referring to "we" who buy them, but "we" who shop at stores that sell them - if we were buying them, we clearly wouldnt care, and therefore wouldnt want to boycott anyway!

didnt realise about the buy and sell bit on here! there's so much on here to read i haven't got to that yet - thanks :)

oh yeah, theres buy and sell here for sure. and its great. good fish keepers with the right ideas that want to breed and sell to others, knowing we will buy / sell the highest quality of fish we can. but its just not enough, i dont consider myself an activist by any means, im just a guy that gets loud over the things i dont agree with. Dyed fish is but a small blip on the map when it comes down to the fish market, and i think anyone worth their weight in marine salt would know that.

Its fun to get a forum riled up over boycotting and angry about dyed fish, theres not much we can do about it, individually we just have to keep our noses clean and share our knowledge the best we can.

end.

we'll have to agree to disagree :P admittedly, anything that can be done would be difficult, and potentially not worth it in the long run, but most of the rights, freedoms and benefits we have today are the result of activism in its various forms

quote from BBC animal activism
Politics
* Lobbying for pro-animal legislation
* Campaigning about animal issues
* Telling other people about animal issues
* Writing books and articles about animal issues

these methods have proven successful in the past, and theres no reason we couldn't do more if we really wanted to!

Your right good sir, we will have to agree to disagree, seeing as were both right, and wrong.

As for your amazon / ebay for fish. im totally for that, fish people selling fish for other fish people, at least there we can black ball the bad sellers and by having a large enough user base, cover more postal area and be less reliant on the LFS.

Edit: Also, i meant to mention about the boycotting, the smaller mom and pop shops most likely wouldnt be on the boycott list (the rule, but most certainly not the exception) but stores like petco, pets at home, ect they wouldnt even take notice of a boycott their money is pouring in by the truckload from all the inexperianced people that run in get a 20g throw 300 fish in it then wait 2 weeks for them all to die then blame the pet store, they know it, you know it, i know it. and its all about the $$$ friend.

not to mention the bulk of those chain stores cater over 53% of their stock to K9 another 30 to filine, then in order: Birds Fish Reptile then ect. whatever ect may be.

Sadly

I don't really agree w/ boycotting stores that sell dyed fish. I mean my LFS is terrible, bad quality, bad heath, and out of about 20 tanks 3-4 hold dyed fish. They have been trying to sell a parrot that had its head dyed red for $44, I really don't like that store. But the store I buy my fish from still sells dyed fish. They have 100+ tank w/ only 2 tanks having dyed fish. Other than that the place is awesome.

more postal coverage = less distance for fish to be transported :good: i would think it'd be quite a project, but if enough people would be interested I'd be happy to put the time in!

very true unfortunately - education should be the answer, but I doubt the health of their pet fish is top priority for most people :(
