Well literally 2 days ago my mum asked a guy at the tip to look out for tanks and now here today i already have a big hexagonal tank! :hyper: WOOO! I love it next step - filter, heater, lid, light, ornaments for it as it gonna be a quaratine/ hospital tank. One question as well if i put a sick fish in their - it recovers i put but in the main tank. Would i have to throw away the filter media as its "germy" lol and cycle the tank all over again?

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: Sorry its so kl!

Oh if you're selling any cheap filters heaters etc pm me - but it has to be post as i can't pick up unless your my nextdoor neighbour

IT WAS FREE! (Can anyone guess that i'm excited? :P )

Here are some pics of it - i also am asking nick to look out for any spare lids heaters etc. Where can you buy lids? After i've done this thread i'm gonna work out how many gallons it is - how can i do that if its hexagonal? 6.7 gallons will it be okay on my desk. Apparently will weigh 59 pounds when full. Also will i have to clkean it all out before i fill up? If so with what?

Nice tank, hope you manage to find a lid that fits it.
I'm going to sound very old here, but what does kl mean?

From the size of it it should be fine on the top there. best thing is fill it and leave it there for a week while you souce all your bits. if there is no sag indent etc it will be fine.

As to the media question i always wash mine after its been used using warm tap water that generally kill and cleans it fully. then i stick it in my main filter to sit and cultivate ready for the next use.

Thanks is it gonna be hard do you think?
Kl stands for kool then to cool :good:
Will do behold :hyper:
Also what happens if you need it right after you just had a fish in their????

To clean it, I would suggest you use a mild bleach solution, or perhaps get your mum/dad to use the solution, 20 parts water to 1 part bleach, as you dont know whats been in it etc, so a good clean would be a very good idea, then wash it out many times until the smell of bleach is completely gone.

Finding a lid maybe difficult, but you dont need a tight fitting lid, I would suggest you get a cheap condensation cover from p@h, about 2 quid and cut it to fit, you only really need it to stop any fish jumping out. You can also buy a cheap light that suctions onto the side if you really need one.

If you use the filter for a sick fish and not just for quarantining then wash it out thoroughly in hot tap water, that will kill any nasties from any sick fish, then just add the media or filter back to the main tank to cycle again ready for the next use.

When I use bleach, I usually drop it in a bucket of water with dechlorinator for a few hours afterward.

You think warm tap water will kill pathogens? That's a bit of a risk in my opinion. Depends if you're quarantining fish you've just bought or if it's ones that you know are sick. If you just bought them, and in the quarantining period they show no signs of illness, then I reckon you'll be ok just to wash out the media. If you're dealing with a definite sick fish, i'd discard the media and replace with some from an established clean tank.

1st q: Maybe, depends if it's a regular size or not - do you know the brand?
2nd q: Don't understand...

Minxy what happens if it hasn't cycled and a fish is ill? It takes like a month to cycle again. When i add back to the tank do i just add the media or the whole filter?

Do these condensation covers have a feeding lid, and do they just ahve to be balanced on top? Also are they see through or black?

Do i need a light if not i probably won't get one but i MIGHT as it will look nice....

Thankies all

I don't know if it will kill path whatevers. I'll eb doing both probably. When i wash out the media do you mean in tank water and then palce back in tank?

I don't want to replace the media each time i'd prefer to wash in warm water.

No sorry and i aint sure if its regular sized.

2nd question was:
say i have just used the media and wash it and placed it back into the tank to cycle again, yes.... say i just found another sick fish what do i do as the media wont cycle that quick will it?

For a lid, I would find someone that works with either plexiglass or glass and have one cut to fit. With the plexiglass, have them cut out a small hole for a handle for easy removal and allow a gap in the back for all your equipment (heater, filter, etc.). With glass, you may have to do two pieces and get a plastic hinge like they use on versa-tops. You may even be able to order this through the manufacturer.

If you need media quickly, just use a 1/3 of your existing filters media and replace what you have taken out with new media.

Condensation covers are clear plastic and no they dont have a feeding hatch, I just lift mine up slightly to put food in.

You dont need a light, for a sick fish, probably best not to have one as keeping them in the dark and quiet is usually best. As you wont be planting it you wont need one.

Cool i'm planning on bare bottom with plastic plants and a small peice bogwood. Does it balance on the top??? Got the filter thing now! horray. No light then =)

Yes a condensation cover just sits on the top, obviously if you get one, you will need to cut it slightly larger than the tank size so it overlaps.

After a quick search online, I've found that the versa-top hinges are quite readily available online. I'd actually recommend you use these on either the glass or plexiglass. They even come with a little handle that you can attach.

For a light you could simply have an Arcadia light that clips onto the edge and hangs over. I'd have that as an open top tank if it were mine, but if there are children or boisterous pets about ( cute dog btw ) then I suspect a perspex lid would be a better idea. That's a great find. Lucky you!
