So I had two male bettas in a 10g tank with a divider. Well, Ice, my newest managed to slip between the glass and the divider over into Flare's side. Well, Flare is a big boy and kicked the dickens out of poor Ice! I removed Flare from the tank, as I was worried about moving Ice after this ordeal. Poor guy is probably very stress (not saying Flare isn't either, but I have had Flare longer so he is more used to me.)I am moving Flare to my community tank, as he has proved already that he can live comfortably with other fish.

Right now, I have removed the carbon from my 10g and I am treating it with Bettafix for Ice's fins. Poor guys tail is a mess, and so is his top fin. The moment I noticed Ice wasn't on his side, I grabbed the net and tried to get Ice to move him, so Ice swam away, and Flare went after him! I have never seen Flare is fullout mode like that!! I literally had beat him away from Ice with the net!!

I don't think the fight lasted long. I had checked on them an hour ago when I fed them. (I always look at them lol) Will Ice be okay? I have never had two bettas fight like that before.

Sheesh, Dies, that's bad news - I would have thought Ice would be ok, it might be an idea to treat him with some Melafix, or similar, and keep his water nice and fresh (two changes per week, maybe). Keep a good eye on him (as I know you will without being advised!), and if anything untoward starts to happen, post back.

If it's any consolation, there was that chap on 2 or 3 weeks ago, with the betta that had those two DEEP lacerations across his back - he was on his way to recovery, and from what you said, Ice is "only" suffering from damage to his fins, not his body.

Last night I started treating him with Bettafix, which is for damaged fins and such (which I used when Rockstar ripped his fins, works great!). I think I am more worried about the stress it put on the poor little guy. I checked on him this morning, and he is laying on top of one the big leaves of the silk plants and has been in that same spot since last night :( I will up the water changes to twice a week as well, the see if that makes any difference. Flare seems to be alright. He was blowing bubbles at one of my platys this morning lol.

I'd lower the water level for him, so it's easier for him to get to the surface for air if he wants. I'd also do more water changes than that, perhaps every other day. Clean water and good food is all he needs for fin growth, but clean water is the most important thing so lots and lots of water changes :good:

Thank you, I will definitely do that. How much lower should i have the water. It is about an inch and a half from the top as it is.

I would say a depth of under 6 inches would be best, if not a bit lower. It will greatly reduce his need to expend energy so it can be devoted to healing

All I know is I will never use those dividers again. I know some people have great luck with them, but unfortunately I did not. If I ever do a divided tank like that, I will buy some glass plates and seal them in! I am at work now, so as soon as I get home, I will do a water change and lower the level.

I consider myself, and Ice, very lucky that Flare didn't kill him. Flare is twice the size that Ice is...this has me very frazzled.

aw bless him....he certainly knows who's boss now eh? xx

Oh yeah. of all my boys, Flare is definitely the man.

Ice is now doing some of the things my other bettas did when they came down with Ich. Laying on the bottom of the tank, not really eating, flicking...I looking him over carefully, I cannot see any white spots.

Should I go ahead and start slowly raising temp, just in case? I know these are some of the signs, and he has been through a very stressful ordeal.

Lower the water level, and more frequent water changes. leave flare in the community tank. Turn temp up and keep a close watch for white spot. is Ice eating enough?

+1

I lowered the level of the water and Ice has taken comfort on top of a leave of my silk plant. The leaf is very close to the surface. He is eating, but I don't know if that is because I sprinkled the food above him or not. He looked so comfortable. I am slowly raising the temp. It's at 26C right now from 24, I just took it up another notch. The goal temp for White spot is 28 or 29, and I right? I examined him this morning, and I still do not see any white spots on him, so that is good.

You are on the right track. just keep sprinkling food above him. Is he eating or spitting it out?

flicking can just be a sign of stress too, so dont jump on the itch bandwagon just yet. i dont know how long uve had him, but if both fish started showing signs, then i would be worried, (since you would think both would have it, if they were sharing a tank) .....

I once had a betta in my community tank. One of the other members of my tank was a Paradise Fish. What I learned is that apparently Paradise Fish and Bettas don't get along either. The Paradise Fish shredded the betta. His fins were completely chewed off. I removed the Betta to another tank and he recovered with no problem. I don't remember if I used aquarium salt in the tank to reduce infection or not. Might want to check if Bettas can tolerate salt. But he was back to normal in no time.
