Hi all,

I've just cleaned out an old tank that has been empty for a while. It's a 120 litre tank, (32x14x18) which I used as a tropical tank before.

To be honest I was going to throw it out or sell it but now it's all clean and the lighting still works I thought I'd give it another go but this time with cold water fish.

I've decided on some white cloud minnows and gold barbs to start with but I'm a bit in the dark about bottom feeders. Can anyone suggest the best type for a tank this size stocked with smallish fish. I saw somewhere someone suggested weather loaches but would they be a bit big for me?

Many thanks.

Yes, weather loach would get too big.

What sort of temp will your tank be running at? If it'll be around the 22°C mark, you could look at peppered corydoras (not the salt and pepper ones!).

I have no idea on the water temperature I'm afraid, I havn't got any water in there yet, waiting to a buy a new filter and gravel and will then start the cycle. I'm not intending on having any heater in there at all though if that helps.

Thanks

If your house is fairly warm, you should be alright, but it would be better to get the tank set up and see what temp it runs at.

One thing; if you do want to look at corydoras in the future, it might be best to start off with sand rather than gravel, as most bottom dwellers prefer it and it's easier to do it when you're setting up than having to strip the tank down to change it later :)

i'd second the peppered cories.
from what i've read they will go as low as 15C which will be good for the WCMM aswell altho don't know what temp the barbs need.
i'm thinking of using the peppered cories in my next cold water set up.

the other one i found was an indian moth fish it can go to 12C

Some of your native gudgeon like topmouth and whitefin could work

and most of your freshwater coldwater gobies
