Well ... my 125l tank has been cycling since last Saturday ... I've been testing for Ammonia everyday at the same time ... after initially adding 6.58 of Ammonia as per calculator on the site ... it read at 5ppm ... the following day it dropped to 3ppm

Ever since then it has stopped at 1.2ppm is this normal?

I've just been round to a friends house and he's given me a large piece of bogwood that's been in his established tank for what looks like years

Will this aid to the cycle ... or does it "have" to be filter media?

Thanks. :good:

It will probably help, but not much.

The beneficial bacteria live on surfaces that have good water circulation. If you kept the bogwood wet on then way home and it was in the higher flow area in your friend's tank, chances are it has a fair amount of beneficial bacteria on it. It will not provide the benefit you would get from a piece of filter media but is certainly a leg up for your filter because it means some of the right bacteria are present in your tank.

i agree with OM47, but if your friend has this tank set up why not take some media from him, that will for sure speed the process up

Thanks for your replies ... my friend has a under gravel filter in his tank so no media to take :(
