Hi, i have had a fish tank in the past that was fully fuctional and healthy (not to mention fully cycled) but i had to give up my fish keeping hobby due to money reasons. However, i now have enough money to re-establish my hobby, so i just wanted to know whether the filter, and it's media was suitable to use again (even though it's been out of use for about 6 months) and would this help in the process of cycling the tank or even reducing the cycling process by a lot. Also for further information the tank is the same as well (whether or not you needed to know that lol).

Hi jordm111! was the filter left in any water at all? the only way the bacteria that developed within your cycled filter may have survived is if it was kept in water ( i think) Otherwise I'd say you should give it a good clean out and start a fresh cycle. ALSO! If you happen to live nearby Chester, UK I have some mature/cycled gravel going spare from my now sand filled tank.

you can use the same media again, but it wont help with cycling as all the bacteria wil have died!

I would see how the media cleans up (only water, don't use any soap of course!) For some types of media you might want to go buy fresh materials, for others the old stuff might be ok. You don't need carbon, so its basically sponges and ceramics I'm talking about.
