Okay Something Is Wrong

okay i will try here then.

got a new 10gal tank,

1) washed it out very well with water
2) placed established media in there
3) let the heater do it's job to warm the watet up to 75-80F 60C
4) placed the stones in there and a large shell
5) placed the fry in
6) they started dying one by one for 1 week straight, no signs of struggle, they just sit at the bottum curved, then die.
7) tested water everything was fine, waited 48hrs water was still fine with the test results
8) fry still dying daily
9) took the stones out thinking it might of been them
10) they still dying tho
11) placed 1 female platy in and she died within 24hrs, she was darting around the tank and hanging out at the top breathing lightly heavy

When you added the fish to the tank to you match the ph and temp to the tank they were taken from.
Has the big shell altered your ph.

oh yes,

both temps were exactly the same, the PH is the same as well on both tanks 7.6

So the snail died first.
How long was he in the tank before he died.
Any of the fry flicking and rubbing against objects.
Check there little gills to see what they look like.
Is there plenty of 02 in the tank.
Sorry for all the question its like being a detective.

the snail died within 2 days,
the fry aren't flicking or rubing against anything,
the fins are fine to me,
they are the only ones in the tank now (they are only 1 month old)

Sadly fry do die but everything that gone in the tank has died or on its way out.
The adult livebearer why did you add her to the tank in the first place?
She was completely healthy till you added her in with the fry.
Did she start darting around the tank and heavy breathing straight away.
Did she carry on darting and heavy breathing till her death.

i added her to keep up the bacteria in the filter
she started acting like that after a few hours that i placed her in there
she died overnight i didn't see what she was doing as she was passing away

Got to go now but will be back on soon.
I will have a good think.
If you remember anything please add it to the thread if you forgot something.

Did you sterlise the stones you put in.
I would do some water changes on the tank, but add abit more declorinator than you nornally use.
Also I would remove the shell for now.

Wilder asked me to take a look at the thread and as I read, my thought was that it could be an issue with an uncycled tank but as I read on, it sounds as if that isn't an issue. I am at a loss as to what is going on unless there was something in the tank that didn't come clean when you rinsed it out. Maybe some type cleaning items or other contaminants that got in/on the tank when it was in the store. My suggestion would be to break the tank down and clean it good with a mixture of water and ammmonia (about 20 parts water to 1 part ammonia). Make sure you get it rinsed good when you are finished. Other than that, it really makes no sense what is happening.

Thank you rdd1952.

i boiled rinsed the stones 3 times in hot water, then boiled them and let them sit in the boiled water, then did another rinse. however, i did find after removing the stones from the tank there was dirt remaining, i since cleaned 20% of the water and used the gravil vacuum to suck in the dirt.

i suppose i can take everything out and clean the aquarium again, i do recall it having a glue/vinagery smell to it when i first got it out of the box, i did do a wash down tho. i will do it again i guess and the fry will go back in the other tank for now.

i will leave the fry in the main tank for now as there is only 3 fry left. not sure if i should bother filling the 10gal now as the medias bacteria will probably just die with no fish in there.

these are the same type of rocks i used, thanks to a members pic :D

To keep the bacteria alive in the 10 gallon, you could use a small amount off ammonia just as if fishless cycling. But if there is a problem with the tank, it could still be a death chamber when you use it again.
