Ok Ok Ok....

thanks jessica, about the post and packaging, i can pick it up frm my lfs as they sell tht tank..
what tank would you suggest, it really needs to be under 20gallons as it wont fit...thanks

If money is tight why not stick with fish that suit the tank size you have? You've been given enough suggestions.

I personally wouldnt buy a tank from a lfs, they are just crazy prices. I know that it may seem risky to buy second hand but people will generally put the condition of the tank they are selling. And at the end of the day, even a leaking tank can be fixed with a tube of sealant for a fiver! ;)

Seriously though, both my tanks are second hand (I think a lot of peoples are) and they are perfect. Just read descriptions and if in doubt, ASK! If its a local one, ask if you can come view it, they shouldnt mind putting water in to show you it doesnt leak.

You can get an idea of volume from the following website:

www.####.co.uk/Calc.htm - edit - okay, apparently I cant post a link... Just google search for volume calculator!

It really depends on where you are putting it, for example if you only have 2' of space, try looking into taller tanks rather than long to up the volume.

Look on the website I mentioned in the last post to see if theres anything in your area, and try doing a localised ebay search, but for second hand rather than new. If you want me to have a look for you let me know your rough area and your budget.

If you are set on getting a new one, what about the plain glass ones that come without extras in the pet shops? They are cheaper than the boxed 'kids' systems for the size, and if you already have a small tank you may be able to use your filter and heater from that one.

sorry website dont work...and i havet got a stand, its on a drawers, i dont think it cud take much more! ill have to invest in a cheap 2nd hand stand

edit: whoops just realised aout link#!

great idea about using the heater and filter, my superfish aqua 1 flow fletr does 0- 80 litres, plus my heater is 50w....yea just glass ones sounds cool
thanks alot jessica

If you are short on cash, don't forget about Freecycle - all you need to access the *free* listings, is a yahoo email address. There are many groups for areas all over the UK. The groups in London are massive and the turnover is quite unbelievable. You're bound to find a tank in your area (free) shortly. You'll just have to keep your eyes on the listings, as stuff goes quickly.

yh jessica that sounds good, could you either reccommend a website to get just tanks off or could you have a kwik browse?? thnaks either way i wil use my filter and 50w as i think they will be ok for the tank, im thinking about 15 gallons... this way its about 70 litre, and the filter does 0-80 litres but im not quite sure about the heater, its 50watt? :good: thanks again

o yea jessica, my budget is £65.00 and i live in the east midlands - nottingham

I got a 15 Gallon tank for £3.20 at a fish auction, it was second hand, it was also custom made, but made pretty decent, it had a crack on it that had been securely sealed with silicone, and it also came with aquarium sand. Why do you keep looking at these little tanks all the time? Go to pets at home or something, I got my 30" one from there for about £20, and the lid is only another £20...

Fishtanks can be found here, takes a bit of sifting for ones in your area, and some people want silly money, but dont let them dishearten you. It sometimes takes a few days to find the perfect one for you, but patience is a virtue, or so Im told! ;)
Ebay can also be ok, but again you have to sift through quite a bit. The benefit is that you can do a search within 25 miles of your own postcode as long as you are a member. There is also Freecycle as mentioned by Bloo.

New glass ones will be for sale in most lfs. You can have a look at sizes available on the clearseal website here.

I would look for you but I dont know where in the UK you are? If you are in London you shouldnt have any trouble finding one. There seem to be a lot of fishkeepers in the Yorkshire area as well for some reason! I've been looking recently for a third tank and there seems to be none in Preston where I am, but loads over there!

Try checking your local paper at the back in the classifieds section or Loot (a regional classifieds paper). Loot are also online Here but I dont know how quickly things go online. I find that I'll ring about some bargain or other from the website to be told "Sorry love, sold it last week".

Have a scout around before you decide on anything, after all, its worth holding out for the best you can get, it gives you more time to save up, and its not like the fish shop will sell out of livestock!

Jessica

Edit - Woohoo! My links worked! I'll have a look for you and see whats about. As Neal said, there are some bargains to be had. It depends how mobile you are ( or how willing your mum is to indulge your hobby by driving you round!)

just asked my mum if i can and she goes on saying no, its perfectly fine, im afraid to say shes one who keeps fish for ornaments not pets, at the mo im really annyoed with her..just had to net out a dead black phantom................

if i got a 14 gallon clearseal one, how much would it cost + iv got to get a hood

Tell her to mind her own business...

14g clearseal, ummm, is that the 18x15x12 one? Mine was £15 for the tank, but the hood was about £15.

if i say that she will probably take down the one thats runing! £30 is £10 cheaper than the one i have now! and i can use all the components! but this is kind of hopeless seens how my mum thinks i can have 18 inches of fish in the 6gallon just coz a guy at the lfs hu has had fish for 3 years said so

Hi,

Firstly don't be annoyed with your mum. I know they can be a pain cos I am one but as she pays the bills just be grateful you have a tank at all. Don't blame your mum or the lfs for your stocking level. In recent posts you have argued about the amount of fish you want/can't have and the lfs/your mum are not forcing you to put to many or the wrong sort of fish in your tank. If they die cos of over stocking, you are responsable.

Secondly I just bought a rekord 60 (54l approx) and it cost me £59.00, new. Ths stand cost £24.00. I bought them from Southern Aquatics. Try pets at home for tanks as well cos they do some good deals.
