My poor little Sherbert isn't feeling well. I noticed yesterday that he looked a bit bloated. I didn't think much of it, b/c he was still acting very normal.
But today... he's definitely not acting like himself. Didn't come to the front of the tank to beg for food, and he's staying in the bubbles that the air pump makes. He's not swimming weird though. he just liked the air bubbles pushing him up I guess.
He's still bloated, so I'm fasting him and right at this moment giving him an epsom salt bath.
It's very hard to tell what his scales are like from above b/c his coloring is very light so it just looks strange, but after taking him out of his tank and getting a very good closer look at him, I notice that some of his scales around his stomach area (where it's bloated) are slightly sticking out! He's not even THAT big. His stomach is just slightly larger than usual (as if he just ate), which is why I didn't think anything could be wrong when I first spotted it.

Oh god I hope he's only constipated and this is not dropsy again. I dunno why the heck this would've occured if it is. His tank is the cleanest out of all of them. Nice and cycled, no algae (finally), hardly any debri on the gravel, just a great tank.
He gets good food, he's always been so healthy and lively and.. sigh.. I'm just really worried right now :(

Come on little guy... POOP and go back to the way you were.

Oh I do hope Sherbert is ok and it's just a case of being bunged up. Makes it even more frustrating when their living accommodation is the best you can provide. Let us know how he does today. Come on Sherbert......POOP!!!

He's back in his tank now. No pooping while he was having his salt bath.
I'll give him another tomorrow if he's still as big as he is now.
I'll fast him another day as well.

He's swimming around right now though which is good since he wasn't doing much of that earlier.

Come on.. just be constipation!

Dernit.. I meant to get some peas today too so I could feed them to my bettas but I completely forgot. BLEH!

Well... he's doing the same thing today as yesterday. Just floating in the air bubbles.
This is really worrying me.
I can't tell if the bloating has gone down or gotten worse though. I think it's about the same.
Sigh.......
I'm going to give him another epsom salt bath later tonight.
I used 1 tablespoon w/ a gallon of water. Would a little more salt be more helpful? Or would it harm him?

this is the quantity I use...Half a teaspoon per gallon for maximum 15 mins

Just gave him another salt bath. He's not doing worse, but not doing any better either.
I think I can see the bump under his skin that might be the problem. It's not very large but doesn't look good.
It's hard to see except at certain angles.
Scales in teh bloated looking areas are still slightly sticking up though which stinks.
Sigh.... my poor Sherb

I had this issue with a single fish last week. It was not dropsy but the fish was bloated so much that the scales stuck out, but not to the extent that I have seen with dropsy.

I use protosin (protozin?) when I notice anything like this. The fish tend to get back to good health within 1 or 2 days and the bloating reduces pretty quickly too.

The fish is back to her normal self and eating like a horse! :)

I have medicated food, but I'm really hesitant to use it again.
I used it on my last betta who I had to euthanize and it seemed to have made him sicker than he was before I started using it.
Before I started using it, he acted totally normal. Then pretty much the day after, he was lethargic and barely moved all day long.
So I'm trying to keep that as the last option.

Anywho... I was a bit desperate earlier and gave him some pea from a can. He ate it up though.. now just have to wait for him to poop. Not sure if he's done anything though.

 pea from a can wot you like! Well I suppose if it makes him go...I should hold on the meds I find with bettas it often just finishes them off...I just rely on aqua salt, or epsom or ick meds. good luck anyway keep us posted :good:

Lol.. I actually don't eat peas. The cans of peas we have in the cabinet were left here by my sis-in-law when they were staying with us for a short while :p

Anyways... he's really not doing well. I'm going to drain some of the water out of the tank tomorrow or add in some cabomba for him so he can rest near the top of the tank. Going to try another epsom salt bath as well tomorrow.
If he starts getting worse though... I'm gonna euthanize him.... sigh.. I don't even want to think about that right now.

can you put a photo of him up. one of my sb girls a breeder let me adopt when I bought one from her, Always always looked fat, I used to starve her and keep her in a shallow container so she didnt have far to swim to the surface. Then I used to feed her tiny bits of food more often than the rest. Try epsom bath again, but he might just suddenly sort himself out...they do sometimes. I had one with popeye and i got him round..... :good: :good:

Well a few minutes ago, I put him into another salt bath, and a few minutes into it, I noticed he started bleeding.
I thought he might've been pooping blood, but it started happening again and he was bleeding from one of his gills!

I didn't know what to do, so I took him out and put him back into his own tank.

think I should put some aquarium salt into his tank? I've started it on maracyn 1 & 2 as well today b/c it looked like he has some fuzzy stuff on one of his fins. And figured it wouldn't hurt to use it.
Sigh.. I don't know what to do.

He's a mess to much going off now bless him.
My be kinder to do the awful deed.
Look up bleeding of the gills.
Sounds like a severe haemorrage
