hi all, bought 2 gbr's yesterday from a lfs shop i'd never been too before not a huge selection in fish but what he had were quite unusual and seemed pretty competative, i.e discus £25 for 6" specimens green tiger barbs 10 for £6, bronze corys 6 for £5 etc, but i did notice some tanks fish looked a little lethargic and quite a few with fin damage, i should of just bailed i guess but after driving 20 miles to get there i had my plans on a pair of GBR's, they were about 3" in length i got them home and acclimatised them in the tank 20 mins later left in a touch of the tank water then left them acclimatise again then repeated before i released, fish swam strait to the bottom and hid not unusual, after about 4hrs i spotted the male he was breathing very rapid and was washed out, after about 6 hrs i found the female she had settled on the substrate not good i thought the male seemed to be buddying up with the bolivians i have in the tank so by the evening he was swimming with them although still washed out, but this morning i came down and the female was DEAD :-( the male is still swimming with the bolivians although still washed out and breathing faster then the bolivians, checked tank strait away and all readings are fine, all the other fish are fine ph is good temps are good basically everything is good so was it just a "weak fish?", or maybe shock? and do i now need to replace the female to stop any poss aggression? i no my tank is good so whats going on??

That's a shame, really annoying when that happens. It's either a problem with the fish, a problem with your tank, or a combination of the two.

Could you please post the tank temperature, and your exact readings for amm, nitrite and nitrate, ph, and if you have tests for them, gh and kh.

hi i cant do gh or kh but here's the results,

amm-0ppm
nitrite -0ppm
nitrate - 15ppm
ph- 6.8
temp -77 (25c)

male gbr is now hiding and not eating

Does the shop have a returns policy? Take it back with a sample of your water.

It's possible that they weren't acclimatised well enough and they got shock when they were released into the tank?

Sounds like they were not acclimatized slowly enough to me. Roughly how much volume of the bag water was added before release?

Did you ask what ph they were in at the shop?

yes did ask him but he seemed pretty clueless said its whatever comes outta the tap  my gbr seems to be swimming ok now and actively looking for food although he is clinging on to the bolivians  but do you think i should get a female gbr now as im sure i have one of each with the bolivians

Its a shame same thing happened to me one time with my pair of bolivians. Bought a male and female and only the male survived. Good luck
