We came back from shopping tonight to find one of my females had been beaten up! Nearly every fin she has is damaged  Half her dorsal fin is missing, one ventral, some of her anal fin, and half of one of the flappy ones (what are they called?) I suspect the big huge female although no proof as I didnt see it happen. Bit miffed as I added loads of new caves this week to help them hide from eachother to try and avoid agression. But instead I get a half killed betta! Ive put her in a jar on her own for now in the hope that she will recover. Shes swimming about fine and looks ok so fingers crossed!

Whats your set-up like, keeping a female beta community requires alot of room, some hidieng spots, and an odd number of the fish to develope an effective pecking order. I dont mean to sound rude or demeaning in any way, i just have no idea how you've got your community set up. Some bettas just cant live in communitys because of their agression. You should probably remove your wounded female and treat her in a seperate tank for her wounds so they do not become infected. If you can get back to me and lemme know what kind of a tank you've got going on, i may be able to suggest to you some opions as far a community goes. Good luck treating your girly, i hope she makes a full recovery. :good:

I already said that Ive taken her out to treat her. Ive got a 10 gallon with 5 girls a massive plant and loads of caves, added more caves this week. The dominant female is about twice the size of the one that got beaten up. I think she was just unlucky, they usually arent too bad. She should be fine, its no worse than breeding damage.

yeah, they should all be about the same size. my big betta pretty much beat the crap out of all the other ones in my tank. i dont even know how it got that big, it looks like a freakin bass

Next water change, rearrange everything in the tank, and introduce them all at the same time, might work...

Already did that this week, just a bad day I think! Might keep the poorly one on her own now.

Yeah all but one are sisters the big one is bigger than the male I have from their spawn!

Some females get buxom and huge. The dts I have had and seen often are. They were probably fighting over the new digs and your alpha fem went kamakazee.

Sorry about the girl. Be sure to treat the wounds and keep her very clean. She probably should be kept separate until it is certain that she is healing and all danger of infection is past. If the "thick" girls doesn't settle down I would replace her in the sorority.

Thanks jollysue. Ive been having a good look at the bigger one after thinking about the differences between males and females and Im pretty sure she is a female just rather macho, she doesnt really fight with the others but they are her siblings. The poorly one isnt. Ive added some betta spa (IAL) and a small dose of melafix. I was thinking of keeping the little one out, but might swap them over. I was about to condition the poorly one for breeding so its all rather annoying! She seems happy enough at the mo though so fingers crossed!

:shifty: you big girl looks a tough cookie. hope the injured one is ok. girls ..dunno glad i have only got one!

CT's have a reputation for being aggressive. Yes she is a girlie and eggy.

The hurt girl just didn't fit in because of the family bond then, I suppose. Girls from the same spawn do tend to get along better it seems to me. I had some sister pairs in a previous tank. They squabbled, but always came to the other's aid. lol I lost that whole tank to fin rot, so I am very careful about tending and separating any damaged Betta.

I would keep the sisters together probably.

I want to add 5 or 6 females to my sorority and would like to get sisters. The five now are 4 pk sisters and a vt from petco, The Vt is a little larger and has held her own very well and has even been a little bossy. But that is changing as the sisters mature. But the VT appears to have established her place. The most aggressive of the sisters has a couple of pecks on her head. Fiesty girls! haha

 Hi! liz! It's going on midnight here. On another day that would be my morning, but it is my day off, so I am heading for bed. :p

thanks guys.

She was fine over night so im hoping that no fin rot sets in, shes quite happy in her little home. The big meanie is being ignored at the mo for being so mean!
