Thats why I don't bother doing water changes on cycling tanks as it slows it down, even doing the water changes dosn't seem to do much.
Only do a water change when fish are really stressed, best to get the cycle over as fast as you can then delay it longer.

Don't think the barb will make it to be honest.
What are your latest stats.

Some lfs will keep the fish while you cycle the tank.

What do you propose then, that i dont do water changes and dont add anything to remove the nitrites/amonia?? surely theyll all die???

surely the cycle should be over soon?? the filters have been in there for 5 weeks now i think...

The lfs seemed to think the barb will make it once the nitrite is right down.... he's not gasping for air anymore but the colours have faded and he always looks like he's trying to find a way out...

Not sure of the exact stats as didnt record them, just know that the water went pink for nitrate and nitrite (more so for nitrate) they were both a long way off from 110mg but pink nonetheless...

10% water changes won't do much for the fish anyway.
There never any quarantee's that a fish will make it in a cycling tank, it takes it's toll on the fish causing the immune system to shut down.
Try and only do a water change when fish alter there behavour.
Nearly there now fish seem to go downhill towards the end of the cycle.
