Oh No! One Down, Others At Risk?

Sounds like you are overfeeding if you have to net the food out.
Just give them enough for the fish to consume in a minute.
Just keep testing the water if your filter is new and you have added the fish too soon the bacteria has not built up in the filter enough to deal with the ammonia and nitrites.
If this is the case one thing you could do is get some filter media from an established aquarium and add it to your filter/squeeze the water from it into your filter.
Keep up with 10% water changes every day too until your water quality is correct.

The subject of salt has had a big discussion on this forum already.I personally would not add salt to a freshwater aquarium especially if it is to do with your nitrites, that is what you should be looking at in my opinion.

Ok every body entitled to there opion.

Don't test the water for a few hours will get a false reading.
Don't do large water changes it will slow the cycle down.
Airstone will help with the cycle, also salt what fish are in the tank.
Get a jug of tank water and add one tablespoon full of salt that should be fine with the catfish but no more.

Im going to try and buy an air pump tomorrow but im concerned about the other barb as he looks like hes desparately trying to escape and keeps swimming into the flow coming out of the powerhead... I take it there is nothing i can do to help him until tomorrow when i buy the airpump?? why dont the other fish seem to have a problem with oxygen?!?!?

Have you lowered the tank water to airinate it more.

the waterline is about an inch and a half below the plastic lid....not sure how much lower it should be. it was filled to the max line before...so yes i have but not sure if enough.... btw he still appears to be looking for oxygen....

Keep stiring the water up with your fingers.
Not much to be done really, he might not make it to be honest.

A cycling tank can take its toll on a fish causing there immune system to shut down.
Good luck hope he makes it.

Thanks... I have pointed the pipe coming off the powerhead down towards the midwaters where he spends most of his time so hoping that will make a slight difference... Hoping an air pump will resolve this issue straight away....
