Im such an idiot!!

This morning I had my first 0 nitrite reading on my cycling tank readings were at 9am

Ammonia 0 (brought it back up to 4ppm)
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
ph 7.5

Now nearly 12 hours later they are

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
ph 7.5

Problem is I wasnt thinking and added more Ammonia to bring it back up to 4ppm  Now ive just realised I should only be adding ammonia every 24 hours!
Is this going to mess my cycle up? how long now should I hold off adding more ammonia?

Feel so stupid..things were looking up now ive made a silly mistake

Don't worry about it, just add the ammonia as per normal from now on, ie. in the morning if that's when it's easiest for you.
It won't have caused any problems, just created some extra nitrItes for that bacteria to try and chew through. The only reason you add it only on the 24hr marks is because then you are providing enough to keep the 'ammonia-munchin-bacteria' happy, without providing them with so much that the nitrIte gets to REALLY silly levels :)

(I can never remember the correct names of the various bacteria, but my names work :) )

Sounds good to me :good: (we've just been calling them "A-Bacs" for the ammonia oxidizing bacteria and "N-Bacs" for the nitrite oxidizing bacteria :) )

~~waterdrop~~

Well thats nice and easy to remember, A-Bacs and N-Bacs it is then :good:

Thank you I was worried lastnight but ive done my tests again this morning and its reading

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 50 (gonna do a water change today)
ph 8.0 after using ph buffer

Think ill add some ammonia tonight and this is when Im concentrating more with no kids around me lol

Yes, I can imagine the conversation gets quite interesting when explaining to new starters that they can't get any fish until their NOBs grow and mature (sniggering again :) )

yeah i know........ i'm not funny, but i make myself laugh and that's all that matters.

nah when WD first popped up on the forum he started calling them AOB's and NOB's which I think is probably a reasonably correct way of referring to them scientifically. We all sniggered until he started calling them A-Bacs and N-Bacs instead and it's just stuck. :good:

Now, now, there MW, there I was in this trying to be subtle and not even mention the NOBs, being in polite company, lol!

I know, that's why i brought it up. just yanking your chain. God knows I need all the laughs I can get at the moment!! :p
