EEEEKS!!!! :-( :-( i came home last night to 2 of my vt bettas on the same side of the tank. calico, the naughty little boy, jumped the divider and got into a huge fight with poor bb, whose fins were just starting to regrow after a bout of fin rot that had left his previously beautiful fins all raggedy. calico was swimming at the top and poor bb was hiding out on the bottom beneath the filter. i immediately netted calico and put him on his side of the tank.

then i turned on the light to heat up the tank & added some salt to the tank because both bettas' fins are mangled, especially poor bb's. any suggestions about what meds, if any, i should use? any other procedures I should follow?

thanks much in advance!

i recently had a very similar situation. try to keep them as calm as you can. you may need to put some paper or somthing along the divider so they can't see each other and stress them selves out flaring

i used salt, melafix and anti fungus for the fist few days, and now, about 9-10 days later they just have salt with a drop of melafix and colloidal silver. my boys were EXTREMELY beat up and i was surprised that they survived actually!! they are fine now and very active, although they're fins look like they went through a blender!!

also be very srict about frequent water changes...clean water will help prevent any bacterial or fungal infection!!!

hope that helps!
pm me if you have any questions!

ooooh, thanks! i will buy some melafix tonight. is it with the regular ich/fungus/fin rot type meds usually? i don't think i've seen it before at my lfs or lps.

and i will put some sort of solid (not see through as my divider is) type divider in.

oh, colloidal silver? what is that? and can i get it at lfs or lps's?

thanks!

oops, forgot to tell you that i do strict water changes and testing every week. i'm a fanatic about water quality!

Melafix is great stuff for fin rot/damage. My angels showed marked improvement and growth of their fins from this stuff after the second day of treatment.

Do the full 7 days of treatment, regardless of the smell.

It should not hurt the other fish in the tank either, it actually made my healthy fish grow out fuller.

Melafix is usually kept with all the other fishie medicines. At least, everywhere I've seen.

I hope your boys get better soon!

Bettas will definitely jump. I lost Ty last week when he jumped through the 1.5" hole for the heater in my 5 gallon hood. the opening is so small, I don't know how he found it but he did. He had to jump up about a inch to get out.

thanks for all the help everyone. i bought some melafix and added it. boy that stuff is strong smelling!! i also gave each boy a 30-min salt dip for extra healing benefits. i hope this stuff works cuz they both look awful! esp. bb.

but they are both more active now; eating all their hikari pellets and the live brine shrimp they got as a treat. they don't swim around as much as they used to, but at least they're not looking as traumatized as they did before.

i had heard that bettas jump, but had never had any of mine do it before. thank god there aren't any holes in my hood or they might have jumped clear out of the tank!

i think what happened is that i may have filled the tank with a little too much water after i did my water change the other day. this allowed calico to be closer to the top of the divider. it's still at least an inch to clear it, though, he is definitely a high jumper!
