Hi everyone ok I need some help. I was just sitting and caught a glimpse of a tiny little thing in the tank in the dark corner, where the slate cave is-yes it's a little tiny baby! It's about half a cm if that. I don't know who dropped since they are all still round/square.
I'm fretting now as I can't catch it. I have a turkey baster but can't get near it. It's sitting under the slate cave with the cories. I don't know how old it is, if it's newborn or what. It doesn't hve the googly eyed/jelly bodied look. It moves incredibly fast. I don't want to go near it and it darts out and the others see it then eat it. Should I just leave it where it is?
I just seen it come out and go under the redmoor. I'm so excited! :hyper:

I caught him!!! I placed the trap on it's side just outside the cave and he swam into it! Like I said earlier I don't know where he came from but are platy fry fully developed when they are born? His fins and tail are all formed and looks like 2 black bits on top and bottom of tail :D
Does he look like he's been in there a while and not just dropped today? Here he is.

I'm unable to see the pic, but I would say your swords cross bred with your platies or one of your platies had stored sperm perhaps from the LFS. I'm just going by your stock list there in your sig.Oh I just noticed, is that lyretail and platy or sword?

My rainbow platy females were pretty round about 2 weeks after I got them, so I am suspecting it's them. They are still pretty round. The fry looks maybe about a week old? I have been googling and it definitely doesn't look newborn.
I got 2 swordtail males about 2 weeks ago, one got very bullied by the other so he was rehomed yesterday. I have one male swordtail, 2 female rainbow platies, a female yellow spotted hi fin platy and the lyretail female.
The lyretail female was in the "assorted swordtails" tank so I think she is a female lyretail swordtail. She is very young and was very thin when I got her. She has started to put weight on. I have seen the male breeding with her.
Looking back at the thread I put about my rainbow platy she was very square and other forum members suggested she would drop that week. This is the 2nd/3rd week gone by I thought oh she's still not dropped but she must have and this little baby is one of hers. I remember seeing her last week thinking oh she must have just been over fed as she's not square anymore.
I still can't beleive I have a little fry! He was just chilling with the cories lol.
I have that tetra powder food stuff. Do I just put a little bit in the trap?

From the pic, it looks like it's at least a week or so old.
It's been finding food ok in your main tank, so a bit of the powdered will be fine, maybe mix a little crushed flake in with it a couple of times a day

Ah I thought so! little thing survived!
I just noticed tiny thing darting about and thought it was a leaf-i'm glad I noticed! He is in the breeder trap as I thought he was getting a bit adventurous. He was very lucky, he was starting to come out to the centre of the tank - the weird thing is the male and female swords ignored it, so did my fighter but the platy went straight for it. My heart was in my mouth!
I'm so glad it swam into the trap! I gave it powdered food and it ignored it - I gave it flake and it ate it straight away!

If it prefers the flake, then forget the powdered, he's done well to get this far, & you never know, there could be more you haven't seen yet.
I always used to get surprises a couple of weeks after I thought there were no survivors, they're very clever at hiding

Aww that must be so nice finding little babies every so often!
Oh yeah they are very smart, every time I went near it with the net or turkey baster it would go backwards into the cory cave. I could have sworn I saw another dart away from the platy as I was trying to get this one but then I thought I was going crazy and it was probably the same one.
I am very proud it's survived this long, my fighter is so placid but the platy are hostile and still try to get to him through the trap  sometimes I get a fright when I look in the trap and it's not there but I put some water lettuce over it so he feels safe and he likes sitting in it.
I can't wait to see what colour he turns out.

Thats great, he/she is a survivor and should do well, congrats!

Thankyou, I keep panicking when I can't see him but he's resting in between the water lettuce leaves. Sooo cute!

Ok so my little fry who my little girl has named baby, is darting about the breeder trap. The platy girls still try and eat him through the plastic  the swordtails aren't bothered. I was panicking a bit as I didn't see him eating the crushed flake, so I put some of the tetramin baby in and I think he took some of that and then I put a tiny bit of algae wafer in and he's had a few bites of that. I always clean his box every morning with a turkey baster, so there's nothing left lying around. Maybe i'm overwhelming him with food but I didn't even expect fry as my girls went from square to round about 2 weeks ago and I saw nothing then suddenly this little thing comes out into the middle of the tank. I just don't want him to die. Shall I get some frozen daphnia too? I already have frozen brineshrimp but think they will be far too big for him.

The amount of food you will need for a single 2 week old fry is very small. If its belly is a bit swollen after a meal, it is eating plenty and you can continue to siphon up the excess that you are feeding. It is better to overfeed a bit and remove the excess food than to short ration that baby fish.

Thanks oldman. He has a big belly and I am positive he has grown. Definitely gotten longer, the tails longer. His eyes aren't big and googly they have got that rim round them and the black bit in the middle.
He is about a mm over a cm now lol. He snapped up the frozen daphnia like there was no tomorrow! I will put a pic up tomorrow he's so cute!
I was in pets at home and saw molly fry-really tiny but already coloured yellow and back spots-how long do platy fry take to colour up? He has a sort of yellow tinge to him.

Frozen daphnia will break down faster than ground up flake so make sure you stay on top of those water changes.

After my huge nitrite spike I do a water change once a week on a sunday. The stats read fine, I test it every day but should I do more water changes a week while this baby is growing?
