couple days ago my tank just suddenly got really murky.

im not sure, but i think its because the intake pipe got slightly blocked with a plant. but this was only over night and thats happened before where its got fully blocked with a snail and it didnt even make the water slightly murky.

also around the time it happened i had, had my co2 machine on for 2 days as i forgot to turn it off when i turned my light off then just kept it on the next day when i put my light back on. cos this be something to do with the murky water?

however, i ordered new filter sponges and intake pipe strainer so was waiting for them to come and figured my tank should be ok...

but today i noticed my axolotl (oh my tank is filled with axolotls and one plec btw) was like semi dying. so ive moved them all to a tub and put the semi dying one in the fridge.

but whats happened with the water? its in the process of being emptied now.

some of my axolotls have a fungus stuff on their gills.

could it be from plants?

my axolotls for ages lived in poor conditions because my friend was looking after them whilst i got uni stuff sorted and to bring them up here and she didnt look after them properly at all. and now just because of this, this happens to them! theyve never had live plants before

do plecs give off any kind of bad toxins or anything?

also, i need some aquarium salt to give them salt baths. is there any kind of salt i can buy from a supermarket as my pet shop is quite far away.

Can you get water stats?
The plants are defiantly not the problem, however if you could post pictures of them that would be good, since they could be non-aquatic and they could rot and pollute the water, very slightly worsening the situation (but nothing terrible).

DO NOT REPLACE THE SPONGE IN THE FILTER. This will cause more problems. The sponge in the filter is where most of the good bacteria live, if you change them over you will have an ammonia spike, most likely killing your pets.

I know very little about axolotls, but why did you put on in the fridge?! The fridge is sealed so there is no oxygen going in and out, this will eventually kill it, as will the low temperature - but slowly and painfully.

How big is your tank?

Sal baths may get rid of the fungus but will stress the animals a lot. Is there no anti-fungus aquarium medicines you can use for axolotls?

my tank is 36x18x18

the plants are def all aquatic plants theyre just ones like elodea and cabomba and java moss.

i dont have tank testing kit yet i have one ordered online but its not come yet.

i know i shouldnt have but i completely cleaned out my filter (eheim external) and it was disgusting - it stunk of egg and there was loadsa dead plants and moss and even a guppy (i got a load of guppies as food for the axolotls)

my new filter pads havent yet come but i rinsed out the old ones and hsve the tank filtering now with nothing in it except water just to get all the boits that are in the sand clean.

i dont have time to cycle my tank but should i do loadsa water changes?

i think its time to get rid of my plec as hes getting to big for the tank.

i put the axolotl in the fridge because - well im not sure but thats what your meant to do when theyre ill.

hes died though :( gutted. i had this one since an egg that i raised myself :(

One possible cause if the guppies....

Live guppies is 100% pointless, you don't need to feed them, and any that die will create an ammonia spike.
Unless you are breeding them yourself, they can also introduce parasites and loads of other nasties.
Even if you are breed them yourself, they are not guaranteed to be safe.

You should have probably found out why you were supposed to put him in the fridge, it sounds like a stupid idea to me  .

Lots of water changes (daily) are the way to go now.
I would also recommend you find a good axolotl forum to find out how to treat the fungus, and why you put him in the fridge  :good: .

axolotl.org is a good forum.

i found a topic with someone who had the same thing as me with their axolotl and they were told to put him in the fridge.

should i get rid of my plec? hes actually about 10 - 11 inches. he doesnt move much though. he likes sitting under a cave i have out of bogwood.

Yes, I would take your plec back to the lfs or find someone on here willing to take him (buy sell swap section). A three foot tank is a tad too small for such a plec.
