Some time back, I posted this "flirting" between my red and blue Discus going on..... Is it advisable to let it carry on, or should I just separate them.... (in view of "contaminating" a true strain as oposed to (at least) having a breeding pair) It is the pair in front. (red & blue)

They seem quite small, and there are three in the corner, are you sure they are pairing? I would keep the pair, raise a batch of eggs after 2 or 3 spawns. You can see how they come out. If the fry have good coloring then I would keep up with it. If they do not, then keep the pair and simply dispose of the eggs.

Remember a spawning tank needs to be bare-bottom (no gravel) with nothing but a sponge filter and a spawning cone. Water changes need to be done daily when they are raising fry. A 20 gallon breeder is okay, but a 29 gallon is best.

Just out of curiosity, why do you have to do water changes daily when they're raising the fry?

I don't know about disposing of the eggs, you could leave them in and let them be eaten by something, maybe, but disposal, nah... Maybe if they breed you could get a new strain discus.

the orange discus is a pigeonblood which carries a dominant gene so all fry will be pigeonblood too so you won't alter the strain, but crossing them makes it likely that the fry will be heavily peppered (covered with black spots). Untill they hatch eggs their is no guarantee that they are a pair. I would leave them and let nature take its course as it is wonderful to watch them being parents but it is difficult to raise fry in a community.
