I noticed a couple days ago some bubbles in Hemingway's tank. At first, I thought he may be starting a bubble nest, but over the next couple of days, a strange film appeared on the top of the water. I plan on changing the water, but I wanted to wait to find out what may be causing it. I looked up possible causes, and some say he might be constipated, and others says its the water, and air quality of the room. I keep him in a covered 1 gallon tank, and he has been in there since January. This is the first time I have noticed this problem. Their is even a stranger film that is attached to the top of the water, and comes down. It is thin, and almost net like. He seems to be eating all of his food (3-4 pellets) and he is swimming around fine. I'm concerned as to what that weird film might be. I usually do 100% water changes every other week or so, and have been doing so since I first got him. No problems up until now. A few months back, my brother overfed him for 2 days, and when I returned, I changed his water, and he was fine... So I don't think it has anything to do with the food. I also have a female, and she is in a 1 gallon fish bowl, with no lid, and she seems to be perfectly healthy. I don't think it should be anything to worry about, but I hope someone can offer some advice. If more information is needed, I'll to my best to provide it.

I hope the picture attached helps with what I am trying to explain.

Thanks!!
Tomi

Yes thats real weird....could be some sort of algae growth. I know with my sponge filters I always get a white slimy film travelling up the air tube from the water line and after a while it starts to turn black. I'll be watching this post to see if anyone knows the answer.

There is no filter in either tank, so it can't be that.. His entire tank is clear, with the exception of the top, and that weird bit that comes down.. Doesn't seem to bother him...

Do you have any plastic painted ornaments in his tank because I remember some months ago I bought an ornament that looked like an old castle and it was painted in a white colour. I noticed the water getting a bit cloudy after a few weeks and a slime hanging around the edge of the glass where the water line is. I threw it out....so that may be your problem maybe. :/

Nope. As of right now, there are just rocks in his tank. He seems perfectly fine. I think I'm just gonna do a 100% water change for now, and see if that helps. Thanks though!!!
