Ocean Rock.

Has anyone ever used this in with their new world Cichlids. I have tons of the stuff and want to use it on a few of my tanks but I keep hearing differing stories of it rising PH and then others saying it doesn't. I dont have a PH test kit at the moment so that is out (water has always been fine from tap here so never got a new one). I will probably buy one next week when I go to the LFS but nothing till then. I have put some in my 40gal now with a mixture of bogwood and just want to be totally sure so I can take it back out if it will damage anything. Any help welcome on this one as it looks great in my 40gal.

I wouldn't worry about it rising your pH unless it was taken directly from the Ocean. Sometimes manufacturer's just call it ocean rock so anybody who knows nothing will think it will go perfect in their marine tank because it'll be like the ocean. there is a whole thread on TFF about what rocks to use and what not to use in certain situation's. I will look and if I find it... will post the link.

The only rock off the top of my head that you wouldn't want to use if you don't want the pH to rise is limestone. This will leach and cause the pH to rise drastically. The best way to test for limestone is put a drop of ammonia on a rock your testing. If it starts to bubble than the two are reacting and you know it's limestone

Thx OX tou have been a great help recently. That link would be very helpful if you can find it. It's just that I put a fair bit in my 4ft 40gal tank yesterday after the last opinion I heard saying it was ok, then the guy in the LFS (who I trust totally) said it would raise it so.....

Ocean rock, as in the sand coloured rock with holes in it is pure limestone. Not recommended in a soft water tank. It slowly dissolves into the water, raising the KH. This in turn has the effect of raising the pH.
