never thought this would happen, but i took a little bit of plain oatmeal out of my bowl, and fed little piece to my fish. they love it! they would rather eat this than live or frozen food  even my smallest cardinal that is about 3/4 inch will eat a chunk that is 1/8 inch when it cant even fit a brine shrimp that size in its mouth. it just sucks the whole thing in its mouth, spits it back out, and finishes it off.

Sounds like it would be ok for fish to eat. Make sure it is either cooked or soaked, If they eat it dry it could swell & possibly cause harm. How about peanut butter!! lol

i just wanted to try something new, i read on the box that its healthy, and i remembered that microworms eat oatmeal, so feeding oatmeal would be just like feeding microworms without the nematode. it wont harm my fish will it?

I can't see it harming your fish. It is just pure oats though right? Not the kind that comes in a little pack and was mixed with sugar?

I know oats take a long time to digest, as long as the fish don't have any problems with this, and i can't think of a reason why it would be a problem. I just fed my barbs a few and they love them to!

Pure speculation on my part would worry about the nutritional content and digestibility of oats for fish. I wouldn't think it would be part of their natural diet, so they may not have the enzymes neccessary to break it down...

hopefully they're ok, please keep us posted as I'm interested now ;)

Oat is a plant, fish eat plants. Look on the back of most comrcial fish foods. Soy meal, whet meal, fish meal.

Yes, but by that logic, wood is a plant (tree), people eat plants, therefore people can eat wood... which is not true, since we don't have the enzymes to break down wood ... some animals do, though.

Livestock eat oats, soybeans, grass, all pretty much the same. If they put soymeal in there I don't see how a little oatmeal can hurt.

Years back there was a guy named Yule Gibbons who was a naturalist & health food nut. He had a commercial on tv where he said that many parts of a tree are edible. I think he died of a bleeding ulcer a while ago.
