Oap Goldfish Not Well

Our 18 year old Goldfish is ill for the first time ever.

It looks like there is a bit of white cotton wool coming out of his gills with little spermy like tails coming out. As the gills open, there seems to be slight redness inside.

I've tested the water and everything is perfect, the tank is filtered to perfection.

I'm going to the pet shop tomorrow, what's the best medication to get for him?

Do you mean the fish has a parasite also in the gills, is the tail forked.

No, fins and tails perfect, its just the gills, quite puffy and white inside. Off his food, still the same colour, scales are fine, its just the gills.

Columnaris can affect the gills it will look fluffy.
Get you some info.

I didn't realised goldfish lived to this age. Providing he heals, has he got a few years to go?

I believe goldfish can live for many years. I think I read somewhere the world record was a goldfish that grew to be about 50 years old.

Its not good when gills are affected you need to get treating fast.
Don't forget to increase aeration in the tank.

Thanks for that, treated him with the stuff and he healed within days. Much appreciated


One thing though, his appetite has increased ten fold, he just eats and eats and eats, lol Sometimes he almost jumps out when he sees the tub of food
