i have some good dried oak wood and want to rid it of tannins. how long do i boil?

don't boil it, just put it in a bucket of water and change the water each week. When the water stays clear for a week, put the wood in the tank.

oh kk thats actually way easier lol what do i do if the wood is starting to rot or grow stuff

All wood will rot in water. Just hose off anything that grows on it and keep changing the water. Eventually it stops growing stuff. When it does, put the wood in the tank.

I concur, boiling it will weaken the wood fiber, leading to a shorter tank life.

The best wood is drift wood from the beach. That has been in the ocean for years. It needs to be hard wood. Wood like that will last years in the aquarium and slowly leech tannins and salt to the tank, all good stuff
