So yeah it's my birthday today, and I always make a point of telling EVERYONE because I like presents.

So what did my work collegues get me? 2 Angel Fish, a HERD of Neons and 2 albino Corys O_O
delivered by the young lad in the fish shop, who apparently DOES fancy me (and there goes the reason my bf doesn't like me going in there justified then!!).

All the above are going to have to go in my 5 gal hex with bruce, my siamese fighter, tonight for now.
Keeping a very close eye on these 2 Angels (smallish ones, at the moment!!!, my fighter is a beefcake and about the same size as them)

until i get my 30 litre at the weekend and get it cycled as quickly as possible (any tips on turbo-cycling tanks?)

I don't like the idea of having a highly overstocked tank, when bruce is used to having it to himself!!

Nope but I do have another tip.....take all of the new fish back to the LFS (the guy fancies you any way so would be pleased to see you!! ).

The Angels will quickly grow too big for a 30 litre tank. IMO they need a decent long tank (3 ft minimum) to swim in that also has some decent height to it (15" minimum, preferably 18" or more).

Also, the neons are an Angels fave food and won't last too long, particulary in a tank that you have no room to swing a catfish in (ddi you like what i did there!!? ;) )

You might just get away with keeping the cories as I don't think they will bother the betta too much

i wanted corys anyway, i'm going to put them in my 30 litre which has a larger surface area for them to snuffle about in than my hex. the neons might work for now, i know a few people who want tanks now, so i may be able to rehome them.

i do agree with the angels though, they were not my choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

o_O Sweet Jesus! I can't think of anything I'd consider a worse birthday present, especially since I don't even really want the pair of angels I already have *lol*

It's the thought that counts I guess, but wow. This kind of thing is why I specifically requested that nobody get me any fish for my upcoming birthday!

the angels went back to the shop you'll be glad to hear!
and i bent the ear of the guy who let my collegues get them for me! heh.

there are about 10 tetras, i think i'm going to rehome them with my brother who wants a tank now too.

the corys i'm keeping, they're little babies at the moment, they can stay in the hex for now until my new tank is set up.

Cool.

alls well that ends well.

Oh, BTW......Happy Birthday for yesterday!! :bday: (forgot to mention yesterday, sorry :*) )

All might seem well and good, but...
What type of Corys are they?
And do you planning on setting up a brand new tank with neons in it?
If so, don't. A waste of 10 neons.
research. research.research

*i* do research for fish i plan
but these were thrust upon my desk yesterday afternoon! heh!

albino corys they are. try and get pics tonight when they're staying still. they're babies at the moment, so they're about an inch long.

my brand new tank was meant for my betta Boo who is currently in a bowl thats gonna get a bit chilly this winter.

my bro wants a tank of his own so we're going tank shopping tomorrow near where he lives to see what we can find. i'll probably find something around the 6-10 gallon mark and make him a nice community, possibly involving these neons!

the 30 litre tank you are going to put your Corydoras in won't do im afraid
Please consider getting a bigger tank. They should be kept in something at least around 100 Litres. If you don't get them a bigger tank, they will most probably die in such small conditions from Ammonia poisoning.
They may seem like babies, but babies DO grow(believe it or not) and they will get too big for a 30 litre tank.

Please, as i said before. Cycle the tank before you add any fish in it, especially neons who will surley die. They also need a 10 gallon MINIMUM, and bigger is always better.

don't talk down to me please, cheers.

i am going to cycle the tank. i didn't plan on these fish. and know people who do keep lil corys in that size tank, successfully.

i don't have room for massive tanks. i'm in a houseshare. i was only going to get a 26 litre when my parents got me a 30 litre as a gift.

yes bigger is better, but sometimes those big size tanks just aren't practical. if i had my own house and lots of ££ yes i would. but i don't. that's why up until now all i've kept are two bettas.

now don't talk to me as if i was a child. thanks.

To be fair Cat, I don't think Dwarf Dude was talking down to you, and if it came across that way, I am sure he didn't mean it.
He has been on these boards for a while and I know many people have benefited from his advice.

What he has said is against what you want, and I can understand how this would prompt you into being annoyed, but he (as most people at this forum) is only looking out for the sake of the fish.

I think a little backup wouldn't have gone amiss from his post, for example;

Neon Tetras require a mature tank. This is a fact, look at any narative on them and you will see. Mature usually means months old rather than just weeks and cycled. In addition, as a rough guide, 10 neons = 10 inches of fish, which would just about do in a 10 gallon. I say just, as a 10 gallon would only hold around 8 if you consider the displacement of the gravel, ornaments etc.

As for the corys - these too are delicate fish - very delicate. If you have bad stats they are the first to suffer. Albino corys have a max size of around 3 inches, so they'll need around 9 gallons, bare min. 30 litres is 8 gallons.
You could maybe get away with keeping some dwarfs in there, but again, it wouldn't be reccomended.

You've made it quite clear these fish weren't obtained irresponsibily, there was a genuine reason for buying them and the people who did no doubt thought they were doing good. Its not your fault that you have the fish.
However, now you do have them, you have a choice - house them adequately, return them to an LFS, or take your chances.

From the sounds of it, the first isn't an option, you'd rather not do the second, which, unfortunately, leaves the third.

You will find plenty of people on these forums who have been heart broken as their 'once in a lifetime fish' has been available at their LFS but they have had to pass, as they know they haven't been able to dedicate the space, attention, time or whatever to looking after them. It is a do-able thing. Returning some livestock like this too should generate some store credit too, which you could easily use for something else, thus not rendering your gift a waste.

As a conclusion, I would urge you to consider the needs of the fish and also to listen to what people say here - every single person who bothers to reply is doing it because they like fish. You may not agree with what they say, but chances are its relevant.

Good Luck in what ever you choose to do, and please let us know.
