im wanting sand but also something good for the plants

could i have nutritious substrate below then sand on top?

yes, things like tropica substrate go underneath substrates like sand, its a good, cheap way to do things, but i found that the tropica substrate clouds the water badly, other things like jbl substrates can be used, go on aqua essentials and have a look at their range.

i personally havnt used that so cant comment on how good it will be, i would search it on here, or into google and see what you come up with, if you do get it, 1 bag will probably not be enough, but again, i cant really comment.. aaron_north might have used this on his "forgotten valley" scape, pm him and ask

good luck

Had a quick look a few people use it also a few saying tetra?

Its not goin to be full of plants, but more than 10

iv got a FE CO2 system with a solenoid, iv got TPN+ and just looking at buying some easycarb

Had a good look around to day on nutritious substrate, seen alot on cat litter, the only thing that put me off was if the water came into contact with it.
i dont want it changing the water chemistry, hurting fish or making the water go funny (colour),

saying that if i used
JBL AquaBasis plus or TetraPlant Complete Substrate can these affect the water? ( colour etc)

I know ill have about 1cm of nutritious substrate then capped off with about 1-2" of sand

aqua bass and tetraplant will cloud

if you want a cheap clay substrate to be capped...100% clay cat litter fits the bill perfectly

Is there any what are or you recommened?

Do i push the roots all the way down into the cat litter or just into the sand so the roots grow into the cat litter?

pets at home do a 100% clay cat litter as do tesco

just plant the plant according to how it should be planted ie plants with a rhizome should not have the rhizome placed below the substrate.
make sure the sand layer is sufficient enough not to be disturbed by fish.
