its fine for small tanks, but can give you fluctuating CO2 levels apparently, i change it regularly, and have no proplems. I also clamp the tube near the bottle before changing it, stops you losing the CO2 in the tube. I also dont bother with their mixes. make my own, theres a good guide in the pinned section on this.

why dont you want the cannister with the children? i had 2 on my tank and they never went near it, i used to stand them on top of the tanks( the cannisters not the kids), and they really arent very appealing to little ones, and very hard to open when in use too,, but i would recommend them as when you have the cannister part the DIY mix is cheap and reliable, its only when i got my osacrs that i threw the towel in where plants are concerned.
you also get a hang on thingy so that they can hang off the side of the tank, maybe out of veiw from little eyes. but at a system i def rate them as an excellent starter choice, and more experienced for that matter too

you can tie the cannister to the wall of your cabinet to stop it getting knocked over, get some material and screw it on. when wrapped around the cannister.
