I bought the most gorgeous female betta today. Im wondering whether she can live in harmony in the same tank as a male betta? I know you cant have to boys together. I wanted to house her with the boy i want to breed her with. Not intentionally breed...if it happens it happens....i have her in my communal tank right now but shes probably better off in the tank with one of the male bettas. I was going set up my other tank so she would be in an Aqua Start 320 38ltrs with another male betta.

Is there any special requirements for a female betta?

Ok firstly no, it wont work she will need her own tank, she will not be better off in the tank with the male betta, females can live with a group of other females ideally around 5 but not with the boys, I also wouldnt be so light on the "it if happens it happens" side of breeding, it is so complicated and with just 30 fry I have my hands totally full it takes up a LOT of time and effort and money.
No special requirements for her just the same as the boys a good staple form of food like a pellet and a treat of something meaty like bloodworm once a week. Congratulations on your new addition sorry if that sounded harsh, what does she look like?

Unfortunately, they should never be housed together.
Many people have tried and had no problems for a couple of months, only to find either one of them ripped to shreds.
Breeding should only take place with plenty of research and experience.
The AquaStart 320 is only 28 litres and will be fine to house just your male Betta. He will appreciate having the tank all to himself!

I agree with the others - definitely not good to put the male & female together in a tank. When I first started out I was ill-advised by someone at my LFS that it would be ok - so I ended up learning the hard way when I walked in and saw them both fighting and my male had barely any finnage left on him!! Was extremely upsetting...to see such a beautiful fish with glorious finnage be reduced to a baldy!

I nursed him back to health in a separate tank and his fins grew back over several months but are quite raggedy at the ends.

The males are much better off in tanks of their own!

She seems to be doing fine in my communal tank. She is sleeping in amongst the floating plants right now. I was just curious if she could live with a male. Dont think i want to put her in there now! She is a healthy looking fish, purpley colour with blue flecks through her and has a shiney metallic blue on the tip on her tail. Even greyish stripes when looked at one way. Smallish. I will try to take a pic tmw or the next day but im waiting till shes settled in. The other fish dont seem to mind her which is good.

LOL, that's funny - she sounds just like my female betta! Under the light the purpley-blue colour looks amazing. Will be interesting to see a photo to see if she's the same as my Phoenix!

Oh, and yes, my female is in a community tank (with peaceful fish) and has been for almost a year now with no problems at all. So providing yours is of the same temperament and isn't amongst any aggressive cichlids, all should be well.

It's just the mixing of the male and female together that wouldn't work (that's usually only done specifically for spawning, for those who are into breeding bettas).

No i didnt put her in with my cichlids. She ate this morning. She is hiding in the floating plants. Cam out to eat then went back. I think shes sussing the rest of the fish out. Im hoping she settles in ok. Her buddies are: 1x albino corydora (2yrs old) 1x gold gourami (2yrs old), 2x bristol nose plec, 1x tiger barb(2x yrs old)1x neon tetra (2yrs old), 1x glow light tetra thing,2x clown lochaes (2xyrs old) and 4x blue rams which are small. The tank is not aggressive at all and she seems to be ok. It may just take a bit to settle in because some of the fish are quite big.

I hope she settles in ok. She flaps around when i say hi but i just think because of the size difference with a couple she may take a bit longer to settle in.

The place i got her from had a few females all in one tank, can you house more than one female together? After seeing the different colours females can be and how pretty they are i ould love to set up a female tank.

My male jumped into the other side of the tank and found another male betta there. Ive been nursing him back to health now for a few months. Hes going good though. His fins are growing back nicely. All though not as coloured but he is in one peace :) Even though the tank was closed with the lid he still managed to jump! Lets say he learnt his less lol and i put a peice of penplax divider on the top so its sits flush with top of the tank.

So here is my new addition Petal..

edited post because apparently its a boy!

this just might be me, but ..she.. looks very much like a he.. a wild caught varity placket male..........he looks just like bronzcats diesle.....a very pointy anal fin and very long ventricals... looks very pk male

Well...i just looked at another photo in a diff thread and it looks the same as a boy but diff colour...

Hmmm.......guess i have a girl! At least i didnt put them in the same tank  What sort of fishy is he then?

probaly a placket male, , short fined bettas, bred for fighting so some are extra nasty... yea that would have been bad....i could be wrong but it realy dose look like a boy, try to see if it flares with a full bread under its chin?

Well if he is a boy then there goes my idea of a female betta tank :( Looks like he will get a tank of his own! Or a new buddy in a divided tank.. I might drop him into a breeding box for now till we figure it out?? Dont want anyone getting nasty if he is a boy....for now hes dubbed Pepsi.

Definately a gorgeous male PK. And is the splitting image of our Diesel and yes very temperamental lol

This is Diesel

Hes stunning!

So should i put him in a breeders box till my tank cycles which was for the girls? Imsure he will survive well. Right now he is just in amongst the floating plants. Doesnt feel like coming out i dont think. I tried to get him to flare but he didnt. Ramjet didnt flare for ages when i got him. Im assuming aswell he needs to be a solo tank buddy?
