Now that his fins have repaired and grown out some, I had quite a surprise today when I noticed that he is, in fact, not a veil tail! He's a crown tail and becoming quite beautiful!
I was in the store helping the ladies unpack the new shipment of bettas, when I pulled out this male with blue spots on his dorsal fin. (Kinda fatasy-dragonesque.) Fell in love with him, and took him home, blue water and all. I thought he was all blue, even with the coloring, but when I got him into clean water, he's actually red and blue in a rather interesting blend. His bottom fins (the tendrally things that I don't know the name for, are blue with silver tips.)
I knew he had some fin damage from ammonia burn, but I wasn't expecting him to heal into a crown tail! I thought it was just ragged fin growth at first, but he definately has the crowntail-type very wide tail that's always in "flaring" position, and his dorsal fin ends in the crown pattern. I can just see the silver starting to grow on the very end of his tail. I wish he would flare at me so I can see him in all his glory, but he's the only betta I've ever had that has never once flared!
The rescue betta is still healing - he was in MUCH worse shape.... His fins are actually curly. All the fins have a very distinctive wave to them, and his tail curls in a ringlet when he's not moving. I don't know if it's serious damage, or the way his fins natuarally are. He's been in clean water for three weeks now, and his fins have never shown signs of rot or redness.
Anywhoo, wanted to share! I thought it was a nice surprise!
