I'm not new, I've been keeping fish for years, but have been out of it for a time and only just really started back up in the past year.

I'm doing really well, I have 10 tanks, all but one of them is filled with different species of puffers (I have 11 different species now).

I set up a 4-foot tank approximately 2 weeks ago, however I seeded it by putting a sponge from an established tank into my new internal filter, plus I transferred water from inside my external filter to the inside of my new external filter, as well as filling the new tank 50% with water from my established tank. I have the one external and 2 internal filters running on this tank (you can never have too much filtration where puffers are concerned). I test the water frequently and have been getting ammonia and nitrite readings of "0" since the start.
I had to move all my fish into that tank immediately due to having problems with some other puffers that needed to be separated, so I had no choice in getting fish into this tank right away. There are 21 fish in this tank now. It's a 56-gallon tank. I've got lots of plants in there as well.

So, here's the question:

When should I do a water change on this tank, and how much water should I remove? With the water parameters being so good, I have been afraid to do a water change, although I know one must need to be done sometime soon.

Even though I have 10 tanks, it seems that with each tank I forget how I've done the last one and I need guidance. Once it's all going, I'm fine. All my tanks are beautiful and clear with good water quality.

So, if anyone can give me any ideas here, much appreciated.

rehome or the only other way is 75 per cent water changes.
shahrez
but will take a lot more time cycling though.wish you luck

I don't think you understand .... I'm not having any problems, all I'm asking is when should I start doing water changes on this tank?
I don't have any nitrite problems, and I don't have any ammonia problems, or any other problems for that matter.

The only thing I am asking is, after you start a new tank, when should you do the first water change?
That's it, that's all I want to know.
I don't need to rehome my fish, they are fine!

No, no, sorry I guess I haven't made my request clear.
I already do all my water changes weekly, that isn't what I'm on about.

I have recently set up this tank, it's not had ANY water changes at all yet. My question is: When should I do my very FIRST water change on this tank?

When you start up a new tank, how long do you wait before you do your first water change?

I understand your question, unlike everyone else. But I don't want to give you the wrong answer so i'll just bump it lol

some people have different opinions on this subject

most opinion is do a water change every week as you have cycled the tank treat it as an established tank due to the media being transfered along wit the water

Thank you fishnoob88 and kbekll -- at least you understood what I was trying to say.

I did my first official water change today, and I feel silly for having posted the question because, as you say kbekll, it's really an established tank, so I should have known when to do a water change. But it never hurts to ask.
