I work for a chain pet store and we don't and won't carry dyed fish for the exact purpose that it isn't natural and is deadly. True most chains are not great places to buy fish only for the real reason most of the fish are hooked to one big system. That part I don't appprove of. Mainly because when you have one sick tank there is a high possibility all tanks can get it, but we have plugs to cut those tanks off from the main system. But its a job and I love animals and fish.

Your right not all are bad places. I get alot of fish from chain stores, and some from mom and pop places. But I have seen just as bad of fish in the small LFS as I have in any other store.

Glad to see that.

You're right about there being some dept stores that don't follow a pattern, but there are always anomalies. In this case it's a caring associate and a system that saves the dealer money.

I have to fully agree here. I went to petsmart today, and after what I read about Petco I was really worried. :(

But I have to say there tanks were clean and even while I was there the gal in charge was telling other people to clean them, because they weren't clean enough.

The fish that I got were in excellent shape (very beautiful) and I will post pictures if I can ever get the lighting right and get them to stand still at the right moment so my old digital camera will take a decent shot.

The woman I dealt with was also "extremely" knowledgable and helped me a lot. After I did some research here and via "google" after getting him 99% of what she said was right on the nose. :)

I think it comes more down to the employees than just which chain store.....
