Its a room temp tank, alot of tropical fish do fine in 19-22 degree water, same with plants

That was an interesting read. Maybe my "next" tank will go room temp! I like that idea a LOT.

Ive got one with gymnogeophagus australis, pearl danios and bronze corys all in a planted aquarium. greatbidea and cheaper to run :)

I only worry because there are some days here when it doesn't get above 55º in my office where my tanks are. I suppose I could keep the heater at 65º? It would still use a lot less energy. Hmm.

The purpose of a heater is to maintain the water at whatever temperature you set it to. If the room temperature never drops below that, it never needs to come on. If there's a chance it will get colder then it never hurts to have a heater in there, even if you hope that it never needs to come on.

i see what they are trying to do but i think its misleading. the fish are naturally tropical and so are the plants.

Depends what you mean by naturally tropical. I don't recognise the fish in the video to be able to google them, but a good portion of the fish that are generally sold as tropical fish will do absolutely fine in a temperate aquarium in a room that doesn't get cold. I noticed there are cories in that video, and they're a prime example. Remember that most of these fish come from hotter countries nearer the equator, where their colder temperatures are still much warmer than ours, so while they're tropical by our standards, they're practically coldwater by theirs.
