i want to make a cave and stick it with silicone i was going to by some aqua silicone. My father told me then the normal silicone would be ok as long as i soak the parts i used silicone in water for a day or 2! He said to use the normal one because aqua silicone here in ireland costs €11.00 and normal silicone costs €3! so is that ok to use normal silicone?? 8)

As long as it is just 100% and nothing in it besides plain silicone and it'll work fine.

Usually normal silicone contains mould-preventers and those chemicals kill fishes. When buying silicone, be sure there is a notice "This is safe for aquarium use" or there is a printed pic of aquarium.

I wouldn't put any other silicone in my aquariums.

As long as the tube/bottle says 100% silicone you should be fine. I've used the stuff I get at the local hardware store with absolutely no problems. Just make sure to let the silicone cure for 24-48 hours...

Labelling the stuff as "aquarium silicone" is just a marketing gimmick and a way for them to charge you more for the same thing....

100% silicon is the way to go. So much cheaper and is the same stuff they overprice at the lfs. If you are at all concerned, check the ingredients for mildewcide. If that is listed, it is NOT ok. Otherwise its fine. I used it to make my DIY cave and have had no problems.

Oh and you will notice the tube will say not recommended for aquarium use, thats just to cover their asses. And also so they can market the other stuff at inflated prices.
